The Department: The Community & Economic Development Department of the Community Services Branch provides for staffing resources that serve to build and sustain an extraordinary Carlsbad community. The Position: The City of Carlsbad adheres to provisions/regulations found in the California Building Standards Code(s) [which is CCR Title 24 Parts 1-12] as amended by Carlsbad Municipal Code. State law requires a building inspector be certified within 1 year of employment, without exception
.
Under general supervision, the Building Inspector I/II will perform routine and complex inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and adopted codes. This position requires technical competencies in the field of construction as well as administrative competencies - including good organization, time management and basic computer skills - to manage and close out projects. This position will require frequent interaction with contractors, the public, and city staff. The selected candidate should professionally present himself/herself at all times.
The selected candidate should be willing and able to work productively in a dynamic team setting tasks and responsibilities are often balanced among members to maximize the benefit of the team organization.
Salary:
*Title of Building Inspector I or II will be determined based on experience and needs of the department*
Building Inspector I, Range 56: $32.85-$39.97
Building Inspector II, Range 71: $38.14-$46.40

Key Responsibilities
-
These are representative duties and the emphasis on certain duties will vary depending on the job assignment:
- Make field inspections of industrial, commercial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling
- Issue permits for work to be performed
- Assist in the checking of building plans
- Perform office plan check of residential structures
- Ascertain conformance with Uniform Building Code and pertinent provisions of state and county health ordinances
- Carlsbad adheres to the California Building Code
- Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office
- Explain and interpret requirements and restrictions
- Keep records and prepare reports
- Coordinate plan review with other City departments and divisions, and outside agencies.
Reporting Relationships:
- This position reports to a Senior Building Inspector or Building Inspector II

Qualifications

Knowledge of: Building Inspector I:
- Building tools and materials, accepted safety standards, and methods of building construction
- Possible defects and faults in construction
Building Inspector II:
Knowledge and Abilities required for the Building Inspector I in addition to:
- Building and related codes and ordinances enforceable by the City, specifically Uniform Building Codes, zoning ordinance, and state and county health codes
- The City of Carlsbad adheres to the California Building Code vice the Uniform Building Codes
- Principles and techniques of building inspection work
Ability to:
Building Inspector I:
- Read and interpret building plans, specifications, and building codes
- Make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately
- Maintain cooperative working relations with builders, contractors, and the general public
- Learn proper methods of building construction and inspection
Building Inspector II:
Knowledge and Abilities required for the Building Inspector I in addition to:
- Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials, and detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices
- Advise on standard construction methods and requirements

Experience & Education

Building Inspector I: Any combination equivalent to the experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Equivalent to graduation from high school and previous experience in the construction industry
Building Inspector II:
Experience and Education required for the Building Inspector I in addition to:
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Class 'C' California Driver's License
