About the role

The Operations/Safety Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the facility, including boilers, turbines, and the steam plant, while maintaining full compliance with safety regulations, environmental limits, and permits.

In addition to operational oversight, this role also serves as the facility's Safety Coordinator, for both Onondaga and Mohawk facilities, leading the planning, development, and execution of safety and occupational health programs that protect personnel, equipment, and work environments.

We are seeking a candidate with strong plant operations experience and a true passion for safety. This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone interested in growing their career in operations and/or safety leadership.

Key Responsibilities & Operations Oversight:

  • Maintain a safe working environment for all personnel and ensure compliance with facility policies and procedures.

  • Approve and oversee equipment removal from service, clearance/tagging, and safety permit issuance per plant procedures.

  • Maintain operations within environmental limits and permit requirements.

  • Respond to operational issues, emergencies, and accidents.

  • Direct completion of routine operational checks and inspections.

  • Troubleshoot plant issues and coordinate maintenance activities.

  • Support projects as assigned by the Operations Manager.

  • Train, coach, and develop a cross-trained, technically capable, and motivated workforce.

  • Maintain personnel administrative records and manage manpower for housekeeping and other operational needs.

Safety Coordination

  • Investigate all near misses, accidents, and inspection findings; prepare detailed reports and recommendations.

  • Partner with facility leaders and corporate safety on training programs, safety themes, incident reporting, and statistical tracking.

  • Conduct and coordinate field-based safety training (e.g., Confined Space, First Aid/CPR).

  • Lead safety onboarding and orientation for all new hires.

  • Ensure corporate safety programs and procedures are implemented, including Process Map submissions, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and industrial hygiene monitoring.

  • Recommend process and product safety improvements to reduce exposure to hazards.

  • Review safety programs for compliance and improvement opportunities.

  • Stay current with local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Manage workers' compensation cases, medical monitoring programs, and return-to-work processes.

  • Assist with drug and alcohol policy administration.

  • Interface with Risk Control, insurance providers, and client/disposal partner ES&H representatives.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years in power or resource recovery plant operations.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or occupational health/safety preferred. In lieu of a degree, 5-10 years of experience with high-pressure boilers and electrical generation plus formal technical training will be considered.

Technical Skills:

  • Detailed knowledge of steam-generating power station operations and instrumentation/control systems.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge applying OSHA 1910 in an industrial plant (LOTO 1910.147, Confined Space 1910.146, PPE, Hot Work).

  • NFPA 70E awareness to coordinate with qualified electrical personnel and enforce safe work boundaries.

  • Familiar with safe work permits, field verifications, and stop-work authority.

  • Proficient in troubleshooting equipment and systems, interpreting logic diagrams, and developing procedures.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database software.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: OSHA, ANSI, ASME, NFPA.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication; able to present effectively to groups and write clear reports.

Preferred Exposure (we'll train as needed):

  • RCRA generator basics (waste identification, labeling, storage, manifesting with guidance).

  • ASME/ANSI/NFPA references used in power/WTE operations.

Support & Development:

  • Company-provided training within first year (RCRA, NFPA 70E role-appropriate, RCA/incident investigation, IH monitoring).

  • ASME QRO: ability to obtain; employer-supported prep and testing.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in all areas of the plant under extreme hot/cold conditions, noise, dust, and wet environments.

  • Must be able to climb equipment, work at heights, and lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Perform manual labor tasks including pushing, pulling, sweeping, and shoveling.

The expected salary range for this position is 105,730 - 130,000

This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary will consider various factors, including experience, ability, and location. Reworld is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
