Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Manager - LASSO II Contract
Location: Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island, FL | Employment Type: Full-time | Clearance: U.S. Citizenship required Astrion is seeking an experienced Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Manager to lead our Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Quality Management efforts in support of the LASSO II Contract at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. In this role, you will manage the LASSO II SMA staff, serve as a key interface with NASA customers, and ensure compliance with NASA, Federal, State, and AS9100D Quality Management requirements. You will play a vital part in advancing safety and quality assurance for critical spaceflight operations while supporting Astrion's mission of enabling safe, successful exploration. This is an onsite leadership role at KSC that requires exceptional technical expertise, organizational skills, and the ability to lead teams in high-consequence environments. Some weekend work may be required depending on mission schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and provide oversight to the LASSO II SMA staff, ensuring successful execution of contract requirements. Serve as a subject matter expert on NASA, Federal, and contract safety and quality requirements. Implement and maintain compliance with AS9100D Quality Management System standards and external customer requirements. Oversee compliance with occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental standards across diverse facilities and projects. Investigate and provide technical solutions to safety and compliance concerns raised by NASA, regulatory agencies, or internal teams. Represent Astrion in direct interactions with NASA, ensuring strong customer relationships and mission alignment. Develop and enforce policies, procedures, and processes that safeguard safety and mission success. Coordinate across multiple project disciplines to ensure efficient, compliant, and safe operations.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Quality, or related field. Experience: 7+ years of related experience in safety, mission assurance, quality, or occupational health roles. Skills:
Proven leadership and team management experience. Excellent communication, presentation, and customer interface skills. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook) and SharePoint. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision. Physically able to climb stairs, ladders, and access equipment in hazardous testing environments; must be able to quickly evacuate in emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
AS9100D Lead Quality Auditor certification. Background in Industrial Hygiene. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or related credential.
