About the Job

The IACUC Compliance Associate is responsible for the conduct, management, and/or tracking of a number of key regulatory functions related to the use of animals in research, teaching and display at the University of Minnesota. The Compliance Associate also serves as a voting member/alternate on the IACUC. The position reports to the IACUC Director and is expected to have the ability to support other Compliance Associates when needed to facilitate the management and function of the IACUC. Compliance Associates may have a specialized or dedicated role to provide lead support in areas of expertise or need (e.g. inspections, protocol submissions, regulatory exceptions, investigations, and data analysis). Requires attention to detail, ability to work independently, and the ability to communicate and interact with faculty and lab staff.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

30% Daily IACUC Operations, IACUC Committee/Panel management tasks
- Independently triages and moves research protocols through the electronic protocol system (eProtocol), including new submissions and amendments
- Conducts pre-screening to ensure that submissions are ready for review and provides initial feedback to investigators regarding submission completeness
- Routes submissions appropriately for review (administrative, VVC, veterinary pre-review, DMR, FCR)
- Updates internal spreadsheets to ensure accurate and up to date tracking
- Communicates with investigators to facilitate protocol submission and review
- Attends IACUC meetings to provide regulatory guidance and administrative support
- Reviews and updates policies and SOPs
- Assists with website updates and preparing and compiling meeting minutes

30% Post Approval Monitoring, Semi-Annual, and other Inspections
- Coordinates and schedules inspections with laboratory/facility staff, committee members, veterinarians and other required personnel
- Conducts semi-annual inspections of animal housing and use areas, surgical areas and related records to meet federal regulatory requirements and ensure animal welfare
- Conducts post approval monitoring of approved animal studies to ensure compliance with IACUC protocols and all applicable policies
- Writes inspection reports to communicate inspection findings to investigators and staff
- Follows up with investigators to ensure timely corrective action
- Documents inspection dates, findings, and corrective actions in databases to facilitate coordination and reporting to IACUC committee and federal regulatory bodies

15% Inquiry/Investigation/Escalation
- Manages communications relating to non-responders to inspection reports and follows through to resolution
- Escalates inspection findings to IACUC leadership as needed to ensure resolution and any necessary external reporting
- Assists with inquiry, investigation, and self-report items, including preparing documents, performing for-cause inspections, communicating findings to IACUC leadership and committee, and tracking through closure

15% Data Management and Reporting
- Generates reports using protocol management software and databases to prepare for semi-annual program review, USDA inspections, AAALAC site visits, and investigations
- Tracks and reports metrics related to protocol review (including time of review and submission volume) and inspections (including number and trends in findings)
- Updates and maintains documentation of exceptions and exemptions to policies (both internal and external) granted by the IACUC
- Updates and maintains database of animal housing and use areas, including investigator managed housing areas and their justification, to facilitate inspection of all required areas

10% Completes other duties and projects as assigned.

Flexible Work Location Profile
The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) and IACUC Office endorses a "work with flexibility" approach that offers a welcoming and flexible work environment where everyone is inspired to do their best. Work location options for this position include working partially remote or entirely in the office. On-site work, including occasional in-state travel, is necessary for this position.

This position has been designated as eligible for flexible work profiles 1-3.
- Profile 1, Office Lab-Based - is expected to work primarily on-site in the office/lab. Only occasionally and inconsistently working remotely. Your office will be located in McNamara Alumni Center.
- Profile 2, Regularly Remote - is expected to work in the office/lab at least 3 days per week. Typically working remotely 1-2 days per week. Your office will be located in McNamara Alumni Center.
- Profile 3, Mostly Remote - is expected to typically work in the office/lab 1-2 days per week. Working remotely at least 3 days per week. Your dedicated office space will be in your remote work location.

IACUC management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
- BA/BS degree plus at least four years of related work experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and ability to initiate and compose correspondence to investigators and to produce accurate written records.
- Strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory research experience.
- Previous experience with IACUC regulations and tasks.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Gmail.
- Familiar with PowerPoint.

About the Department

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reviews research, teaching, and display projects involving University of Minnesota-owned animals, ensuring that the work performed meets the regulatory expectations of the Institution and state and federal regulatory agencies.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $32.10 - $40.13 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
