Maxar Space is seeking a Manager of Avionics Engineering to join our team in San Jose, CA. This role may also be performed remotely within the U.S. In this role, you will report to the Avionics Subsystem Director and be responsible for leading an engineering team responsible for Avionics Unit Development, Command and Data Handling subsystem design, analysis, hardware procurement, and testing. You and your team will work alongside a skilled, cross-functional team and will have the ability to impact all phases of spacecraft design and build: working with Product Management and Mission Architecture teams to build out product roadmaps and develop new Avionics architectures for our various spacecraft platforms, working design implementations alongside Systems and Subsystem Engineering, powering on the spacecraft and collecting data for the first time in AIT, and finally, performing orbit raising activities as the fully built-up spacecraft is on its way to performing its mission.

Responsibilities

  • Lead your team: responsible for Avionics Unit development, Spacecraft Subsystem Command and Data Handling (C&DH) and flight harnesses. This includes working cross-functionally to design C&DH subsystem architecture, wire lists, command & telemetry databases, and data buses. Furthermore, working alongside Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) to resolve on-the-floor anomalies and supporting spacecraft launch
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert for Avionics: provide hands-on technical guidance to engineering team members through expertise in space-based electrical systems full-cycle design and test.
  • Focus on your team: Mentor, train, develop, provide opportunities for you team members based on personal, professional and business needs
  • Ensure the highest quality: of all deliverables to stakeholders, like harness or unit manufacturing and other peer engineering groups like flight software.
  • Foster a collaborative working environment: within your team as well as cross-functionally across the organization
  • Be a partner: with Supply Chain to pro-actively manage procurements, with Business Development / Mission Architecture to develop new architectures, and with Systems Engineering and AIT to ensure clean hand-offs
  • Continuously improve: Tease out product and/or process inefficiencies and make it better
  • Own your portfolio cost models and budget: you proactively manage your budget, identify risks and opportunities to your work, and own your cost models to be used for new business proposals
  • Own your portfolio schedule: you proactively manage to your schedule, and work alongside your peers to ensure stakeholder needs are met

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • A B.S. degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field. An M.S. degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years in aerospace or related field working electronics or electrical systems or product development for high reliability, space-based systems or for critical systems in fields such as automotive, transportation, or medical devices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the space environment and its effect on satellite systems. Exposure to both Radiation Hardened (Rad Hard) designs and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) designs will be great, which should position you to support growing our product lines across various space environment missions
  • Experience with Analog, Digital, and Mixed-signal circuits
  • Knowledge of electronics design and electrical communication standards, such as RS-422/485, MIL-STD-1553, SpaceWire/Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I2C
  • Knowledge of common circuit blocks including filters, power supplies, and microcontrollers
  • Exposure to FPGA hardware implementation for flight applications in the aerospace industry
  • Knowledge of Design for excellence (DFX), root cause, derating, and related analyses
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
  • Self-motivated problem solver, with strong communication, and documentation skills
  • Prior Command and Data Handling Experience, including sound knowledge of related physical components and their relationships within various systems
  • Experience supporting new business development/proposals, including estimating rough order of magnitude costs and schedules

The successful candidate's starting pay will fall within the salary range provided below and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, the experience, qualifications, knowledge, skills, geographic work location, and market conditions. Candidates with the minimum necessary experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skillsets for the position should not expect to receive the upper end of the pay range.

* The base pay for this position within Colorado is: $110,000.00 - $184,000.00 annually. * The base pay for this position within New Jersey is: $110,000.00 - $184,000.00 annually. * The base pay for this position within the Washington, DC metropolitan area is: $122,000.00 - $203,000.00 annually. * The base pay for this position within California is: $127,000.00 - $211,000.00 annually.

For all other states, we use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range.
