Position Purpose
The Mason II is highly qualified and experienced, responsible for performing the more complex tasks and independently some of the routine tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, remodeling, and renovation of masonry structures of brick, block, stone, tile, firebrick, plaster, cement, drywall, and similar materials, including the interior and exterior walls of the College's buildings and other major structures.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • High school or equivalency.
  • Must have 3 to 5 year apprenticeship and an additional 2 to 3 years of relevant experience; or the equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Working knowledge of and skill in accepted surface preparation including the use and maintenance of related tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics used to plan and measure materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.
  • Skill to analyze complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles.
  • Ability to work at heights on cherry pickers, ladders, staging, scaffolding, and working knowledge of all applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill to accurately line up courses that are horizontally and vertically straight.
  • Skill in the use of trowels in spreading mortar and finishing joints and in the use of gauge line, spirit level and plumb bob.
  • Ability to work under general supervision consisting of oral or written instructions, sketches, and easily understood blueprints.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.

Key Accountabilities


Description
Responsibilities

  • Inspects major project work sites as well as smaller work sites to determine appropriate procedures and techniques and the materials, tools and equipment required.
  • Removes such things as tar, dirt, and mortar from surfaces by wire brushing, buffing, and scraping so that materials will adhere properly.
  • Lays common and face brick, firebrick, cement block, glass block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls, walks, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, boilers and catch basins.
  • Repoints existing masonry work.
  • Installs or repairs plaster walls and ceilings as needed.
  • Prepares and installs substrates for installation of ceramic and porcelain tile.
  • Installs and repairs ceramic and porcelain tile, including grout.
  • Installs and repairs slate patio systems
  • Repairs leaks with masonry type products.
  • Performs miscellaneous carpentry tasks including roof sub-structure repairs, duckboard fabrication, and various other general projects.
  • Punches holes in slate, tile, terra cotta, using punch and hammer.
  • Skilled in cutting strips of flashing and fitting them into angles formed by walls, vents, and intersecting roof surfaces.
  • Is designated as a competent scaffold person as defined by OSHA.
  • Assisting with large jobs, and acting independently on routine or small jobs acts, sets up staging areas and equipment in order to ensure the protection of surrounding areas and the safe placement of ladders and scaffolding.
  • Cleans and maintains brushes and masonry tools and equipment and monitors inventory of supplies, materials and equipment; and informs supervisor of upcoming needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties include: installs banners; roof snow removal; assists campus roofer with repairs


Mentorship

Works with and mentors Mason I, explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions.

  • For example, provide clear and concise instructions; educate via offering constructive input to coworkers performing work.
  • While performing maintenance work share the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
  • When qualified, allow the technician to perform the work under supervision.

  • Works on sloped roofs and from ladders, cherry pickers, scaffolds, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working overhead or in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.

  • Work is performed indoors, outdoor, in bad weather, in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes (e.g., tar) are present.
  • Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries while bending metal or working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
