The Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence (PEOPLE) prepares Wisconsin students to succeed in college with an emphasis on enrollment at UW Madison. The program recruits students at the precollege level in Madison (8th grade) and Milwaukee School districts (9th grade). PEOPLE provides a support infrastructure dedicated to achieving the goals of college attainment and degree completion. PEOPLE consists of two programs: one specific to precollege students and one specific to college scholars at UW-Madison. PEOPLE provides students enrolled and their network (families, teachers and counselors) with sustained individual attention critical for being academically, psychologically and culturally prepared to succeed in a rigorous college environment. Students who are admitted/enrolled at UW-Madison are eligible for a four-year tuition scholarship. PEOPLE currently serves over 1,100 students (middle school to college) in the state of Wisconsin.

The Academic Lead is the on-site academic facilitator and is responsible for teaching academic projects/workshops to PEOPLE students. Academic projects/workshops will be provided to Academic Leads by the PEOPLE Educational Content Specialists and Assessment Specialist. Academic Leads are also responsible for assisting in managing the tutoring services at the Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE) site, this includes assigning students to work with tutors and or assisting a student with working through assignments when a tutor isn't available. PEOPLE student attendance and relevant notes will be tracked by Academic Leads and reported to the students Precollege Advisor. Academic Leads are supervised by Educational Content Specialists.

This position is part-time, 5% FTE.

Hours generally scheduled 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm Monday - Thursday. Please note PEOPLE's Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE) tutorial sites are scheduled to be open after school until 6:30 pm serving students in MPS. Some evening/weekend and overnight work will be required, especially during PEOPLE Summer University (June - July)

This position is fully onsite in Milwaukee, WI.

Moderate to frequent travel will be required.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Teaches culturally relevant educational programs to adults and youth using learner-centered activities and lessons
  • Helps design marketing materials and promotions for programs
  • Implements initiatives and events that serve the target audience
  • Procures and maintains course materials and supplies
  • Tracks program evaluation and incorporates feedback for improvement

Compensation:

  • Minimum salary $22/hour

  • The starting salary for a candidate who needs to learn the responsibilities of the position and is not yet performing the full scope of the position is $22.00 per hour ($45,760 annually).


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching, leading, developing, and/or facilitating curriculum or academic enrichment activity

  • Demonstrated experience working with academic support programs and services serving pre-college students, with a preference for expertise working with/serving economically disadvantaged students


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with K-12 system (teaching, administration, consulting) and particularly Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS)

  • A highly motivated, self-starter, and enthusiastic personality

  • Familiarity with curriculum and co-curriculum development, planning, and execution


Education:
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree (in education, student services, youth development, or related field preferred)
