Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose |
Under general supervision, the Payroll Support Specialist, is responsible for assisting University-wide payroll processing, and administrative services in accordance with University policies and Federal and State regulations and other requirements. |
Essential Functions |
- Performs standard payroll functions to ensure timely processing and compliance to regulations and policies as required by law and University policies. These may include but not limited to:
- Processing student, faculty and staff payroll.
- Terminations for faculty and staff.
- Processing Non-Resident Alien activity.
- Serves as a resource to the University community, assisting with University-wide training and support for payroll matters.
- Troubleshoots problems with payroll processing and recommends solutions.
- Performs review and audit of Banner Payroll system data entry and reports to support accurate, timely payroll processing and internal and external compliance.
- Monitor payroll inbox and escalate issues as needed.
- Cross-trains with other Payroll department employees on all day-to-day functions of the Payroll department in order to provide back-up support and guidance for all three campuses as needed.
- Assists Manager in maintaining up-to-date policies and procedures for Payroll, including desk manuals for detailed payroll processing.
- Provides support and assistance in research and analysis for assigned projects.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications |
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of administrative experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in payroll, accounting, or finance.
- AA Degree.
CPP/FPC.- Excellent verbal and written communications skills required, comfortable with public speaking.
- Intermediate computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, and Word, and experience in using automated payroll processing systems.
- Knowledge of Federal and California state employment and tax law, including payroll tax reporting & compliance, payroll audit procedures & practices.
- Solid working knowledge of accounting and reconciliation practices and procedures.
- Skill in staff training and supervision.
- Ability to work independently with critical deadlines and competing priorities.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
- Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, walking across campus, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Hiring Range |
$19.50-$22.50 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. |
