Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Job Description
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T) in Rolla, Missouri is seeking outstanding applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Aerospace Engineering at the assistant professor rank. Applicants are sought with a priority on those with expertise in aerospace research for extreme environments focused on Hypersonics and Space Systems, which are among two key thrust areas of the program. Other candidates with expertise in the general areas of Intelligent and Autonomous Systems for Aerospace Vehicles, Flight Dynamics and Control, Propulsion, Aerodynamics, and Aerospace Structures are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will demonstrate alignment with S&T's multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator research centers and programs, particularly the Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, the Intelligent Systems Center, the Center for Research in Energy and the Environment, and the four centers of the Kummer Institute (https://kummerinstitute.mst.edu), which was established through a $300 million gift transforming S&T by cultivating leadership and technological innovation, nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset, fostering expansion of academic-industry partnerships to address the emerging needs of industry, and creating economic growth for the region, state and nation. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering positively impacts society through ground-breaking research and high-quality graduate and undergraduate education spanning a legacy of over 100 years. It is the largest department on campus, with both programs being the largest and highest ranked among public institutions in Missouri. Both programs also have the highest student placement rate. The department has nearly tripled its research expenditures in the last four years, had five junior faculty receive CAREER and DoD Young Investigator awards in the last ten years, and cultivated several Ph.D. students with prestigious fellowships from NASA, NSF, and DoD. The department is situated in a state-of-the-art 145,000 ft2 facility and has 28 internationally recognized tenured/tenure-track faculty, 9 teaching faculty, 10 staff members, over 160 graduate students (including 80 Ph.D. students), over 1,400 undergraduate students, and over 13,000 living alumni. Applicants should demonstrate previous excellence in research and provide evidence of potential for excellence in (a) establishing a strong, externally funded research program, (b) high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and (c) service in the applicant's professional community and our institution. Qualified candidates will possess a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field. Applicants are encouraged to clearly detail how their aerospace-related education and experience will be reflected in their research and teaching activities at S&T and elaborate on their potential contributions to the existing research activities in hypersonics, space systems, and other areas in the department and the university.
