Description

The City of West Allis Police Department is seeking a dedicated Property Room Technician to play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of police investigations. This position is responsible for securely managing all evidence and property collected during police calls for service and investigations, ensuring it is organized and handled in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
To perform this role effectively, the Property Room Technician regularly reviews police reports and various databases, and communicates with police personnel, other city departments, outside agencies, and members of the public.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintains all evidence/property and ensures all items are secure from theft, loss, damage, or contamination in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

  • Package and process all items taken into evidence each day; bar code and enter all evidence/property items into the Evidence Tracking System.

  • Prioritize work assignments and projects; ensure daily operations of the Property Room are conducted in an appropriate and timely manner.

  • Verify property reports with incident reports to determine appropriate property storage for each item.

  • Audit property for proper coding, packaging, and description; correcting errors and corresponding with officers and supervisors regarding policies and procedures.

  • Make recommendations for changes to Department standards and directives related to the property and evidence control function.

  • Research reports, verify status of cases in the court system, and monitor legal and procedural developments related to the property and evidence function to determine proper disposition.

  • Release evidence and property to the Crime Lab and sworn staff for court purposes, rightful owners upon authorization, and to contact vendors for auction purposes.

  • Assist the Training Unit with In-service Training and New Officer Training.

  • When assigned, plan or supervise the work of a small number of employees (sworn and non-sworn) performing clerical tasks.

  • Maintain comprehensive records related to evidence and property.

  • Staff the Property Room/Property Office and respond to telephone and in-person requests and inquiries from the public concerning the release of property; ensure proper packaging and release of property.

  • Update and maintain the Evidence Tracking System to reflect the chain of custody for each item; return and re-shelve evidence items.

  • Respond to inquiries and requests from department staff, law enforcement agencies, and others.

  • Use a computer and applicable software to enter and maintain data and produce a variety of correspondence and reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Customer service experience.

  • Cash handling experience.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel) and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Strong grammar and writing skills.

  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
