We are looking for an ambitious and self-starting assistant. This is a perfect job for anyone interested in developing a career in academic/educational publishing and/or documentary film distribution and working for a company dedicated to supporting independent documentary films rooted in social justice and human rights.

This person is responsible for providing a range of administrative tasks in support of the team and the day-to-day operations of GOOD DOCS (https://gooddocs.net/), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sage Publishing. GOOD DOCS is a US-based documentary distributor with an award-winning collection of films designed to engage and inspire students by featuring rarely heard stories about individuals and communities working towards a more equitable world. It is part of the Global Sage Learning Resources portfolio of products at Sage.

In this role, this person will work closely with the Head of Film Acquisition and Distribution, GOOD DOCS, and the wider team on a range of tasks to assist in contracts and payments, marketing research, onboarding of films for sale/distribution, website management, and more. They will also provide Executive support to the Associate Vice President, Library Editorial at Sage.

Essential job functions and responsibilities:


  • Assisting with onboarding new films and film product pages to the GOOD DOCS website, including handling media files and databases of film/filmmaker information as required
  • Sending out and storing signed filmmaker contracts
  • Handling vendor or customer payments as required
  • Cleaning research and outreach contact lists in the GOOD DOCS marketing system
  • Onboarding speakers for the GOOD Talks program
  • Proofing and drafting blogs/interviews on the website as needed
  • Submitting films to external streaming platforms and reviewers as the needed
  • Creating graphics for social media and scheduling campaigns in the calendar, working with the Marketing Associate
  • Assisting with conducting research for new films as needed
  • Helping with customer service support as needed, working with other team members
  • Assisting and supporting the GOOD DOCS team with any additional tasks, and coordinating with other internal Sage team members on these tasks as needed
  • Providing executive support to the Associate Vice President, Library Editorial

Education, skills, experience and qualification guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:


  • Candidates who can demonstrate a compelling case for wanting to join Sage/GOOD DOCS and develop their career in higher education/academic publishing or film distribution will stand out; however, no previous publishing/film distribution experience is required
  • Candidates who can demonstrate a passion for film/media studies, and documentary films in particular, will stand out
  • Good experience with Microsoft Office or equivalent IT systems is required. Further experience of other platforms or systems such as: Hubspot, Airtable, Canva, Adobe Premiere, iMovie, and Vimeo would be an asset but is not required
  • Knowledge of various image and video formats (including jpg, png, mp4, .mov, tiff) would be an asset but is not required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Able to work proactively and proficiently
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable working in a remotely managed position.
  • Able to independently handle and meet deadlines
  • Interest in social justice issues and current events
  • Excellent writing skills are a plus
