Organizational Unit Overview
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for development and administration of ECU's comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety program for the entire University including the East (Main) Campus, Health Sciences Campus (including West Research Campus) and all outlying areas (local and regional locations) owned/operated by East Carolina University. It is the goal of the Environmental Health and Safety Office to provide a campus work environment free from occupational and environmental hazards and to promote safe work practices through training and staff development for our faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors. Activities are geared primarily towards prevention and control of occupational hazards, environmental management and emergency management through safety education and voluntary compliance rather than enforcement activities. Audits and advises departments concerning actions necessary to prevent or abate health, safety, environmental and emergency preparedness deficiencies and maintain compliance with applicable local, state and federal occupational health and safety regulations.
Job Duties
Biomedical/Bio-hazardous Waste Management
-Clinic collection outside normal business hours
-Serve as primary backup for EH&S Technicians for bio-hazardous waste and sensitive document shredding
-Coordination, scheduling, and record keeping of biomedical waste pick-up by contractor

Lab Safety Program Support
-Annual bio-safety cabinet ( BSC) certification coordination, scheduling, tracking, and record keeping
-Annual testing/certification of chemical fume hoods
-Assist with hazardous/universal waste pick-ups and maintenance of central accumulation areas
-Assist with lab inspections
-Laboratory surplus coordination

Respiratory Protection Program Support
-Coordinate/conduct fit testing

Training
-Coordinate/conduct Blood borne Pathogen training (housekeeping and other departments as identified)
-Assist with respiratory protection training

Equipment Maintenance
-Coordinate maintenance of departmental vehicles (including golf carts)
-Assist with the maintenance of supplies and laboratory/monitoring equipment
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Training in blood borne pathogens and laboratory safety and biomedical waste handling.
Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures and explain to others.
Ability to interface with users requesting special pickups, and with vendors removing waste.
License or Certification required by the Department
Candidate should possess a valid NC driver's license and be eligible to operate a state-owned vehicle in accordance with the ECU property policy.
