Junior Cultural Resources Specialist

The Cultural Resources Specialist is responsible for leading installation program efforts on projects involving historic structures, cultural resources, and preservation compliance. This position supports public and private sector clients, including federal agencies, through all stages of project development while ensuring compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), NEPA, and state historic preservation office (SHPO) standards.

This role requires coordination with SHPOs, ACHP, and internal project teams to deliver preservation solutions that balance regulatory compliance, architectural integrity, and stakeholder interests. The ideal candidate will have experience ensuring compliance with Cultural Resource practices in the Metro DC area to protect cultural value of historic resources.

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Junior Cultural Resources Specialist:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Junior Cultural Resources Specialist Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead cultural resource and preservation architecture projects in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Conduct National Register eligibility evaluations, field documentation, and archival research.
  • Prepare detailed inventory forms and submit data to cultural resource databases (e.g., VCRIS).
  • Develop preservation plans and internal guidelines for clients to support long-term historic resource stewardship.
  • Coordinate Section 106 consultation processes with SHPO and ACHP representatives.
  • Provide guidance to clients regarding impacts of undertakings on historic properties.
  • Create and review architectural design and construction documents with a focus on preservation of best practices.
  • Conduct site visits and condition assessments for historic structures.
  • Communicate with stakeholders, engineering teams, and contractors to ensure preservation goals are integrated into project execution.
  • Promote adaptive reuse, sustainability, and climate resilience in historic buildings.
  • Coordinate with the Historical Building Architect on findings and plan review.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Junior Cultural Resources Specialist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience directly related to cultural resource management and historic preservation.
  • Degree in Architecture /Historic Preservation or a related field required.
  • Demonstrated experience with NEPA compliance, Section 106.
  • Background in coordinating with government agencies (e.g., VA, USACE, ACHP, SHPOs).
  • Experience working in the DC/Mid-Atlantic area on federally regulated projects.
  • Strong knowledge of National Register documentation standards and procedures.
  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently under the direction of the Historical Building Architect to meet project deliverable deadlines.
  • Familiarity with federal preservation incentives and tax credit programs.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
