We are seeking an Ocean Systems Engineer for APL's Ocean Systems and Engineering Group. In this role, you will work with high-performing teams of engineers in technology evaluations, prototype development, and the fielding of pioneering maritime systems. You'll work alongside a talented team of engineers who are driving innovation in ocean engineering systems for the fleet.

As an Ocean Systems Engineer you will...

  • Apply innovative thinking and detailed engineering expertise to the development, integration, and evaluation of submarine payloads, autonomous vehicles, acoustic systems, communications systems, and autonomy for the fleet.
  • Develop, implement, and test early prototype R&D maritime systems.
  • Lead engineering evaluations to apply R&D technology to urgent or emerging problems.
  • Continue to white paper development, technology surveys, and the drafting of technical findings and recommendations for our sponsors.
  • Support sponsor engagement and concept development for new initiatives.

Qualifications

You will meet our minimum qualification for the job if you...

  • Possess a B.S. in Ocean Engineering, System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, or possess equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Have experience working on projects involving either industrial or military undersea operations, sensors, or systems.
  • Are passionate about ocean engineering and advancing tools for maritime system development, integration, evaluations, and technology analysis.
  • Are skilled in concept design, implementation, and testing.
  • Possess strong organizational and planning skills, with a consistent record of success in team environments.
  • Excel in interpersonal communication, with outstanding written and oral skills.
  • Are able to work effectively with contractors, government stakeholders, and Navy personnel.
  • Hold an active Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Hold a M.S. or Ph.D. in a technical or scientific discipline such as Ocean Engineering, System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Have 5+ years of experience leading projects involving industrial or military undersea operations, sensors, or systems.
  • Have experience as a Principal Investigator for science and technology efforts.
  • Have experience working in a highly technical research environment.
  • Have hands-on experience with maritime systems design and integration.
  • Have a current Top Secret clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
