Position Title: Student Employee, SEA-PHAGES Lab AssistantJob Description: N/AWe are seeking a reliable and motivated student worker to assist with the preparation of laboratories for a Fall semester undergraduate research course involving microbiology and molecular biology (the Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science or SEA-PHAGES project). This is a grant-funded position. The student will work under the supervision of the principal investigator of the grant and the biology lab supervisor and will work up to 10 hours per week. STATUS:Part time DEPARTMENT:Natural Sciences and Physical Education DIVISION:Academic Affairs REPORTS TO:Cathleen Dobbs, Professor, Natural Sciences and Physical Education and Biology Lab Supervisor CLASSIFICATION:Non-exempt Hiring range: $15.00 per hour (Position is FWS Eligible) ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Abide by Safety Procedures & Policies as detailed in the JJC Chemical Hygiene Plan 2. Prepare laboratory materials for Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research (NSCI.296) section 020 (SEA-PHAGES project). 3. Prepare media, including operating the autoclave & practicing aseptic techniques. 4. Maintenance of laboratory equipment & supplies, including cleaning, storage & inventories. 5. Maintenance of classroom and general lab clean-up 6. Prepare chemical solutions. Observe proper handling and disposal of hazardous
materials. 7.Work up to 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am to 4:00 pm. Availability between 8 am - 10:30 am on Friday. 8. Perform other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. GPA of 2.0 or above. 2. Must be enrolled at JJC in at least 6 credit hours. 3. High School diploma or equivalent. 4. Must have taken and passed Chemistry 100 or Biology 151 with a "C" or better. 5. Excellent Customer Service skills 6. Strong verbal and written communication skills. 7. Attentiveness to detail, excellent organizational skills, initiative, and multitasking. 8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Successful completion of Chemistry 101 and Biology 240. 2. Availability between 8:00am-10:30am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 3. Willingness to work a flexible schedule. 4. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency. 5. Demonstrated multicultural competence. Full Time/Part Time: Part timeUnion (If Applicable): Scheduled Hours: 10 |
