Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.29/hr - $25.73/hr.

About the Job

Under the close supervision of higher-level professionals, the Events Specialist assists in developing and executing programming, retention programming, orientations, professional development, and recruitment events. Assists the unit supervisor in tracking the unit budget, including purchasing and reimbursements for student programming, events, and travel. Receives instructions on most work assignments and regularly consults with others in the course of completing increasingly complex tasks. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Exercises some judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the close supervision of higher-level professionals, assists in developing and executing programming, retention programming, orientations, professional development, and recruitment events. Assists the unit supervisor in tracking the unit budget, including purchasing and reimbursements for student programming, events, and travel.
  • Assists faculty and professional staff to support students through a series of activities and mechanisms designed to train, grow, and retain graduate students at UC Merced. Responsible for assisting faculty, including: communications for the programs, scheduling activities, collaborating in the planning and arrangements of events and programs, and coordinating all necessary logistics under the supervision of the faculty lead and staff supervisor. Under the direction of the supervisor, updates web pages and content for programming and events.
  • Assists students by providing general information related to graduate education and degree progression at UC Merced
  • Other duties as assigned include general office duties, participating in intra-office workgroups, attends departmental and unit meetings, special projects, provides administrative support when necessary, updates website and fliers in regards to departmental events, professional development, programming, occasional travel, and occasional nights and weekends are required. Perform special projects as determined by departmental leadership.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience / training.
  • Work experience which has led to the development of the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position is required.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Basic knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Basic knowledge of UC and the department / school / college.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
