About the Job

The Goldstein Museum of Design is hiring a motivated, detailed oriented photographer to work on the collection
digitization project! This 50% part-time grant-funded position is fully on-site in McNeal Hall at the St. Paul Campus at the University of Minnesota.

The photographer is responsible for the efficient production of high-quality digital images of museum collection objects. The photographer also completes all image post-production, manages image meta data, and uploads images to the collections management database (see online version here ). In partnership with a 50% part-time preparator (art handler), the photographer reports to the curator. Scheduled hours are determined in collaboration with the curator and preparator, with the aim of 1-2 full days overlap each week. This IMLS grant-funded project has a scheduled end-date of May 31, 2027.

Essential Functions

70% Photograph Collection

  • Photo document Goldstein Museum of Design collection objects
  • Work closely with preparator to set up and photograph collection objects
  • Prepare images for use using Adobe computer software
  • Link images to collections management database

20% Project Management

  • Work cooperatively to keep projects on task and create effective solutions
  • Discuss project efficiency and quality regularly with registrar, curator and preparator
  • Balance time needed for image production and postproduction work to ensure project meets deadline
  • In coordination with the preparator, track project status to ensure efficient completion of projects
  • Prioritize tasks and responsibilities as directed by the GMD staff
  • Assist with development of operational policies and procedures

10% Maintenance of Time and Work Space

  • Maintain inventory of supplies and order as needed and budget allows
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of photo studio, equipment, and facilities
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • B.A. in photography or photojournalism or a combination of relevant education and experience equal to four years.
  • Demonstrated work experience; please submit up to 15 digital images with application (File Format: PDF or link to digital portfolio)
  • Demonstrated experience with digital camera (on site equip: Canon EOS R6 Mark II Mirrorless Camera with 24-105 mm f/4 Lens; tripod dolly and additional accessories available)
  • Experience working with studio lighting (on site equip: 2 Intellytech Mega-8 3.0 Bi-Color LED Flexible Mats)
  • Experience in Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Lightroom
  • Experience with database/image management software and basic data processing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work productively with staff
  • Comfortable climbing ladders and the ability to lift 30lbs unassisted
  • Must possess the ability to work quickly while maintaining quality and attention to detail, be highly organized and able to work with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience at museums and experience handling artwork
Pay and Benefits

Pay: $25.00/Hr
