Description

Maine Medical Center
Management/Leadership
Req #: 45412

The Maine Rural Graduate Medical Education (MERGE) Collaborative was established in 2022 as a partnership between the four ACGME Sponsoring Institutions in Maine (MaineHealth, Northern Light Health Eastern Maine Medical Center, Central Maine Medical Center, and the Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency at MaineGeneral Medical Center). The mission is to be a sustainable state-wide collaboration that develops and supports a community for high-quality GME education for the rural and underserved. The vision is that the State of Maine will be the premier provider of rural GME and produce highly skilled, diverse and talented physicians who remain in the state after graduation because they are committed to, and prepared for, meeting the unique needs of the people and communities they serve.

The MERGE Collaborative is led by a Principal Investigator and an executive council with representation from institutions across the state. This grant-funded initiative is also part of the broader Consortium for Healthcare Education and Training (CHET), which is an umbrella organization within the MaineHealth Department of Medical Education that supports multiple grants and programs focused on workforce development outcomes in rural Maine. The MERGE Collaborative Program Manger reports to the CHET Operations Manager and collaborates with other CHET leaders and program managers.

The cornerstone program within the MERGE Collaborative is a network of rural clinical sites that are willing to host GME learners as elective opportunities. By 2025, the MERGE Collaborative established 35 unique rotations across 17 unique rural sites. Fifteen different disciplines are represented across these elective opportunities, including family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, Ob/Gyn, pediatrics and more. Fifty-seven rotations were completed in the first two academic years of the program.

In addition to the rural elective program, the MERGE Collaborative also supports other initiatives such as the Rural Education Leaders Academy (RELA) and a summer internship for medical students in rural community health research. Each year, the MERGE Collaborative hosts the MERGE conference, which will become the CHET conference starting in 2026.

The MERGE Collaborative is a nationally recognized program that has been featured at many professional conferences. Residents travel from across the country to participate in the rural electives offered by the program. The Program Manager is a critical role to maintain all operations with GME learners, hosting sites, GME program administrators, and leaders from around the state.
