The Position

The Opportunity

The External Engagement Head is a senior enterprise leader who authors the strategy, owns the accountability and impact of Genentech's Population Health engagement in the external environment. This role is directly accountable for positioning Genentech as a trusted, influential voice across the healthcare ecosystem - shaping policy, forging high-impact partnerships, and amplifying thought leadership that drives enterprise value, creating new pathways for patient growth.

The External Engagement Head serves as a key ambassador for Genentech's Population Health agenda, leading external partnerships, representing the company at national forums and in the media, and fostering collaborations with various groups to address underserved communities. This visionary leader anticipates shifts in the healthcare landscape to ensure Genentech remains a trusted leader, while also guiding a high-performing team responsible for executing policy engagements, partnerships, and publications. Reporting to the Head of the Population Health CoE, this role works cross-functionally to shape a unified narrative for Population Health, focused on patient centricity and equitable access, and provides strategic input on risk and reputation management to elevate Genentech's standing as a leader in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Partnerships & Key External Leadership Representation

  • Lead external partnerships to drive growth, accelerate clinical trials, and strengthen patient trust, directly impacting pipeline success and market adoption.

  • Support community outreach to ensure underserved communities have access to clinical research, publish successful strategies, and deliver evidence-based solutions for reaching diverse patient populations.

  • Serve as a visible Genentech spokesperson, shaping enterprise understanding of external engagement, while safeguarding the company's reputation and credibility through clear risk and crisis management.

External Engagement Strategy

  • Lead the strategy, design, and execution of Population Health's external engagement, defining approaches for community organizations, professional associations, national consortia, and policymakers, and shaping Genentech's external narrative in collaboration with key stakeholders.

  • Work cross-functionally with Genentech senior leadership to strategically enlist employees for external forums and engage the CE Population Health Head to incorporate field perspectives and share external insights.

Advancing Inclusive Research (AIR) External Council

  • Chairs the AIR External Council, collaborating with national thought leaders in clinical research and patient insights to shape inclusive research. Maintains ongoing communication with the Council, utilizing their expertise for internal projects, external engagements, and communications materials for patients and healthcare providers.

Advancing Inclusive Research Site Alliance

  • Leads engagement with diverse and underserved communities and new AIR Site locations to ensure access to Genentech clinical programs, driving community trust and relationship building.

  • Identifies patient barriers and co-creates solutions to drive interest and retention in Genentech clinical studies, activating patient-centric local recruitment and providing culturally responsive patient education.

U.S. Congressional Caucus Engagement

  • Drives long-term strategic relationships with Tri-Caucus members (Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC)) in collaboration with and direction from Genentech Public Affairs and Access (GPAA) to advance patient access and inclusion.

Engage Trusted Stakeholders

  • Amplify awareness and community engagement through publications, webinars, multimedia assets, and educational content, directing and maintaining relationships with trusted community stakeholders (e.g., faith-based institutions, Promotoras, 4Bs - Bishops, Barbers, Beauticians, and Bodega owners) by showcasing compelling real-world patient stories.

Engage Transformative Advocacy

  • Engages with Transformative Advocacy (e.g. 340b, Pricing, AIR) through external partnerships (e.g. WOCIP, NMQF, NALHE, NHHF, NMA, etc.)

Innovative Partnerships & AIR Symposia Programs

  • Convene AIR Symposia in key therapeutic areas and geographic regions

Measurement and Risk Management

  • Responsible for defining, delivering, and reporting measurable outcomes on external engagement performance and Genentech's reputation in Population Health. This includes educating Genentech on external trends, synthesizing insights into actionable recommendations, and establishing/tracking metrics for impact, stakeholder feedback, and reputational indicators to assess thought leadership effectiveness.

Team Development

  • Leads a high-performing team in external engagement and capability-building across the enterprise to meet evolving strategic priorities.

Who you are

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) in public health, policy, communications, or a related field.

  • 15+ years in biopharma, healthcare, or related sectors, with deep experience in external affairs, thought leadership, or policy communications.

  • Demonstrated experience in health equity, patient inclusion, clinical research, and designing and executing enterprise-level external engagement strategies with measurable outcomes.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare policy, population health, industry trends, and proven success building trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders including government, advocacy, research, community health, academic partners, and industry collaborators.

  • Skilled communicator with excellent written, visual, and verbal presentation experience, including for senior executives, and deep cultural and historical expertise.

  • Experienced people manager who can lead teams in a matrix organization and work with senior executive management.

Travel Requirements

The position is located in South San Francisco. The position may require up to 35-40% domestic travel; occasional international travel.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $245,000 - 455,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
