GFT is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join our Practice or CBG Team in Raliegh, NC ! This role follows a hybrid work model.

What you'll be challenged to do:

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC and mechanical clean utility system design for complex, multidisciplinary projects. This role manages the mechanical scope, schedule, and budget from site selection to commissioning. It also supports business development through client relationship management, proposal development, and strategic pursuits.

This individual will serve as a technical leader and mentor, guiding junior and mid-level staff while collaborating with clients, architects, engineers, construction teams, vendors, and trade partners. Depending on the project, this role may serve as the Lead or Senior Mechanical Engineer.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Lead mechanical design on diverse projects, managing scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Act as Engineer-of-Record; oversee engineering and design staff.
  • Prepare & review technical documents: calcs, energy models, reports, P&IDs, specifications, etc.
  • Ensure coordination with internal/external stakeholders for fully integrated, constructible designs.
  • Lead field surveys and identify code or design compliance issues.
  • Provide construction support (RFIs, submittals, punch lists, progress tracking).
  • Drive QA/QC through peer reviews and technical checks.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and designers.
  • Lead system programming and master planning efforts.
  • Support proposals, task planning, and project scheduling.
  • Build and maintain client relationships; represent the firm in project pursuits.
  • Collaborate with marketing and BD teams on presentations and proposals.
Education | Experience:
What you will bring to our firm:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering (mechanical focus, ABET-accredited).
  • PE license in good standing.
  • Experience in life sciences (pharma, biotech, labs) or food & beverage sectors.
  • 15+ years of relevant mechanical/HVAC experience.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC, clean utility, piping systems, and applicable codes (mechanical, plumbing, FLS).
What we prefer you bring:
  • Knowledge of GMP environments and cleanroom standards.
  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
  • LEED, WELL, or other sustainability credentials a plus.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA standards.
  • Experience with Revit plugins (e.g., Enscape, Unifi) and parametric tools (e.g., Dynamo, Grasshopper).
  • Strong cross-discipline coordination and field troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to develop and lead internal technical training.
  • Willingness to travel for project execution and client support.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $130,000 - $180,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
