Chaplain Job Responsibilities: The Chaplain assists the manager or director in leading/planning memorial services, bereavement ceremonies, and staff debriefings to support the religious/spiritual/emotional needs of the hospital community. Assists the manager or director in supporting an interdisciplinary approach to patient care among nursing, medical, and volunteer chaplain staff. Participates in delivering and/or arranging for effective and appropriate spiritual support to patients, their loved ones, and staff in assigned areas. Participates in hospital or system committees as assigned.
- Provides timely and effective spiritual, religious and/or emotional support to patients, their loved ones, and staff from diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds
- Responsible for leading memorial/bereavement services as directed by the Spiritual Care Manager.
- Plans and participates in memorial services for the benefit of staff members and families
- Assists the manager or director in the development and implementation of recommendations to enhance patient/visitor/staff well-being and satisfaction.
- Participates in educational opportunities for nursing, medical, and ancillary care staff on topics related to the spiritual dimensions of health and illness.
- Serves on operating unit committees as assigned by manager or director, eg., Bereavement, ethics, transplant consortium, palliative care committees, etc.
- Develops creative initiatives to promote the value of a bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of compassionate care.
- Works with manager to expand community faith-based resources by developing and maintaining effective relationships with area religious leaders through outreach and in-service opportunities. Contributes to the development and implementation of a standardized training program of core competencies for potential volunteers.
- Assists in the evaluation of spiritual care volunteers to ensure core competencies are maintained and documented.
- Assists in the preparation and presentation of bi-monthly continuing education seminars for spiritual care volunteers.
- Occasional travel to the other Inova hospitals to provide support, as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Master's degree in religious or theological pastoral studies, Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
- Experience: One year of working in a hospital setting or two years of other relative experience
- Certification: Board Certified or eligible within two years of employment
- Licensure: Must obtain endorsement by authoritative board of one own religious affiliation within one year of employment
