The team comprises professionals from diverse fields, including technology, AI, privacy, IP, corporate, employment, tax law, regulatory, and litigation.

About the Role

As an Emergency Threat & Law Enforcement Response Specialist, you'll work side-by-side with our Security & Investigations Legal counsel to triage legal process, emergency disclosure requests, and proactive referrals involving imminent threats of serious physical harm. You'll drive time-sensitive cases and work cross-functionality with teams within Legal, Product Policy, and Intel & Investigations on initiatives to define, execute, and scale our program for responding to legal process and emergency disclosures, and assessment of cases involving an imminent risk of harm. This is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the forefront of legal AI issues and to play a significant hand in ensuring safety and building legal solutions that scale across OpenAI.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA, or in Washington, DC. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Triaging and evaluating escalations from investigators and law enforcement involving imminent threats of physical harm and other emergencies to determine courses of action for the Legal team, and documenting and communicating results to relevant stakeholders.

  • Reviewing legal process from law enforcement agencies for information and responding in strict accordance with applicable law, our terms of service, privacy policy, and procedures, and determining when to escalate non-standard requests.

  • Operating independently and urgently in sensitive cases.

  • Reviewing or being exposed to sensitive or offensive content.

  • Working cross-functionally to define, execute, and scale successful Legal processes and programs for imminent threat referrals, responding to legal process, and emergency disclosure requests.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 8+ years of experience triaging and evaluating investigations involving online threats and/or law enforcement response functions at fast-paced technology companies or technology-focused law firms.

  • Experience dealing with sensitive and offensive content and interacting with law enforcement.

  • Ability to perform in an information sensitive environment and manage work activities within strict privacy and security protocols.

  • Strong technical proficiency and ability to work effectively across multiple applications and databases, maintaining high levels of data accuracy and attention to detail in daily work.

  • Ability and willingness to work across global time zones, including occasional off-hours or weekend on-call coverage, as needed to support critical projects.

  • A strong sense of ownership, are inquisitive and enthusiastic about technology, and can demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to distill complex concepts into clear, concise messages.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
