We are seeking a motivated team player to join our large radiation calibration laboratory within the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medical Physics. This person in this position will provide support to the MRRC's Radiobiology Dosimetry Program. General technologies employed are classified as passive optical dosimetry using Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLD), Optically Stimulated Dosimeters (OSL) alanine dosimeters and radiochromic film (RCF). To support this laboratory program, the candidate in this position must work with lab faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students. Currently there are three faculty members, 14 laboratory staff, and 15 graduate students.

The Optical Radiation Metrologist will primarily support the development of research projects under two faculty members utilizing a range of sealed and unsealed radioactive sources plus ionizing radiation producing equipment. The candidate will work to develop, maintain, and instruct researchers (both staff and graduate students) in passive optical dosimetry methodology. The candidate will support development of novel measurement protocols through modification of analytical instrumentation, design and fabrication of measurement surrogates and analytical techniques and data analysis. Candidate will also serve as new protocol archivist to provide continuous availability of research techniques over time. A small portion of the effort will be to serve as technical backup in Radiation Monitoring by Mail Program.

This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications
  • Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
  • Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
  • Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership

School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medical Physics, Calibration Laboratory

Medical physics was established as a specialty focus within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, creating the first and only basic science Department of Medical Physics of its kind in the country. Faculty within the department have a scholarly focus on discoveries and inventions in imaging and therapy systems, that lead to scientific translation into clinical trials or to industrial translation to create products through collaboration or via new venture entrepreneurship. Medical physics is led by 30 core faculty with 45 affiliate and 14 emeritus faculty members, with many having joint appointments in clinical departments such as Radiology and Human (Radiation) Oncology.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $72,000.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year minimum experience working with ionizing radiation instrumentation and radiation dosimetry.

  • Attentive to details and knowledge of quality control.

  • Effective communication, organization, interpersonal, and customer service skills and be able to work as an effective team member.


Education:

Bachelor's degree with focus in a physical of biological science required.
