Position Summary Under the supervision of Operations Manager, the Head of Maintenance is responsible for the overall care, repair, and preventative maintenance of all buildings, grounds, vehicles, and infrastructure at Camp Lawrence Daley. This position provides direct supervision to maintenance staff and works closely with the Operations Manager to ensure facilities are safe, operational, and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Head of Maintenance will also assist with long-range planning, budgeting, and capital improvements to support the mission of The Salvation Army's camping ministry. Essential Functions Supervision & Leadership
- Work with Operations Manager to hire, train, and work alongside our maintenance staff.
- Provide daily work assignments, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Ensure compliance with all Salvation Army, ACA, and OSHA safety policies.
- Provide leadership and guidance to our summer maintenance teams.
Facilities & Grounds Management
- Oversee upkeep and repair of camp facilities including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, water, septic, and mechanical systems.
- Maintain all camp vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Direct groundskeeping, landscaping, trail maintenance, and fire/fuel modification activities in compliance with Los Angeles County requirements.
- Maintenance related tasks including but not limited to the following:
- Trash runs, clean and set up rooms, move furniture and sound equipment
- Mop floors, clean bathrooms, attend other basic bathroom needs
- Build campfires, clean campfire pit, cut and stack firewood.
- Assist in housekeeping duties when needed.
- Completed tasks in UPKEEP
- Operate camp equipment in a safe and efficient way.
- Specialized Equipment: may be asked to use a variety of equipment such as lawn mower, weed eaters, saws, ladders, pressure washer, shop tools, etc.
- Report hazards found on property to Operations Manager and assist with solution.
- Assist in repairs of buildings, facilities and equipment.
- Perform all duties in accordance with camp policy and procedures, risk management guidelines and American Camping Association standards.
- Assist with emergencies as needed and with weekly emergency drills.
- Assist with Guest Service needs to ensure groups are always taken care of.
- May include hosting rental groups at times.
- Assist with other camp related needs as directed by the Operations Manager or Camp Director
Project Oversight
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules.
- Coordinate and complete small and large-scale repair projects; oversee contractors as needed.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure facilities meet all state and local codes, environmental requirements, and Salvation Army standards.
- Respond to facility emergencies and be available for on-call duty during evenings or weekends.
- Support health, fire, and safety inspections and address corrective actions promptly.
Pay Rate Pay: $24/hour
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 21 years or older.
- High School Diploma/GED required. Associates degree, trade school certificate in operations field, and/or 2 years' experience in the operations/camping industry preferred.
- Must possess a valid CA driver's license.
- Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing or walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more)
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission, philosophy, culture, protocol and organizational structure.
- Must have the ability to work well independently in a detailed, professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Certified and/or experience in applicable fields such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, construction preferred.
- Friendly and personable. Excellent customer service skills required. Team player.
- Experience in supervision of staff.
- Must have good communication skills and pay close attention to detail.
- Thorough knowledge of building policies, procedures and event requirements.
- Word processing experience. Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel is especially valuable.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities, camper and staff behavior.
Physical Abilities
- Ability to understand and implement safety regulations and procedures
- Ability both visual and auditory, to identify safety hazards and monitor guest and staff behavior to enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, and stretch.
- Ability to lift, up to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment.
- Ability to safely and properly use maintenance equipment.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist guests in case of emergency.
- Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours. Operate with daily exposure to the sun, heat and other environmental conditions.
