About the Job

Overview
Working with the U-Spatial team, this position will support geospatial research and teaching across the University of Minnesota and in the community. U-Spatial is a nationally recognized model that provides consulting services and drives a fast-growing need for expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geographic Information Science (GIScience), remote sensing, and spatial computing across the University.

U-Spatial teaches workshops and programs in GIS for youth and adults. This position emphasizes teaching skills, learner engagement, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in accessible ways. Prior teaching or instructional experience is required; experience in GIS required, although training in specific GIS concepts and tools will be provided as needed.

Essential Functions

Teaching Workshops (100%)
* Teach hands-on workshops introducing GIS concepts, tools, and applications to youth and adults.
* Facilitate interactive learning environments that encourage curiosity, problem-solving, and participation.
* Adapt teaching strategies for different audiences, skill levels, and learning styles.
* Provide guidance and support to participants as they explore GIS tools and projects.
* Collaborate with the supervisor to prepare and deliver lesson plans, instructional materials, and workshop activities.
* Collaborate with staff to refine curriculum and incorporate participant feedback.
* Assist other U-Spatial staff in workshops.

The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) and U-Spatial endorse a "work with flexibility" approach that offers a welcoming and flexible work environment where everyone is inspired to do their best. Work location options include working fully remote, partially remote, or entirely in the office and are based on the work of the position. Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote.

This position has been designated as eligible for flexible work profiles 1 or 2. Profile 1, Office-based - is expected to work primarily on-site in the office. Only occasionally and inconsistently working remotely. Your office will be located in Blegen Hall. Profile 2, Regularly Remote - is expected to work in the office at least 3 days per week, typically working remotely 1-2 days per week. Your office will be located in Blegen Hall.

U-Spatial management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent
* Experience with GIS
* Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation, facilitation, and communication skills
* Demonstrated experience teaching, training, or facilitating learning for youth and/or adults
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain new concepts clearly and patiently
* Enthusiasm for helping learners gain confidence with technology
* Commitment to fostering inclusive, supportive learning spaces
* Willingness to learn GIS concepts and tools through training provided by the organization

Preferred Qualifications
* Understanding of spatial thinking concepts
* Working knowledge of Esri's ArcGIS platform and/or QGIS
* Curriculum development experience
* Strong writing skills

About the Department

The Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) is a core research facility of the University of Minnesota (UofM), part of the Research Computing umbrella within the Research and Innovation Office. MSI provides on-premises, advanced, Top 500 research computing infrastructure and expertise to the University's research and scholarly community, and the State of Minnesota, in order to advance and accelerate research and foster innovation and discoveries through advanced computing technologies, scientific computing and informatics, application development, and services. The Institute currently supports over 800 research groups with over 5500 users spanning more than 40 academic disciplines including the sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Rate: $27.00/hour depending on education/qualifications/experience.
