The Pharmacy Technician III, Lead performs complex pharmaceutical duties and/or are assigned lead roles in Ambulatory Pharmacy Services to manage all functions of the drug distribution process in the pharmacy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Personnel
  • Supervise Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Externs, and students in the daily functions of pharmacy operation, if delegated by the Assistant Director or designee
  • For Wood Street Pharmacy, work in conjunction with the Billing Specialist and Purchasing Officer to supervise Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs in the pharmacy operation related to billing and reimbursement for appropriate pharmacy claims
  • Prepare weekly Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Extern work schedules including work area designation and break schedules. Monitor the weekly schedule on daily basis and make necessary adjustments to cover unanticipated absences
  • Assist the Assistant Director or designee in coordination of employee requests for time off and management of Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Extern coverage
  • Process payroll data entry of benefit time used, arrival and departure times for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs, prepare payroll records for approval by management Audit time of arrival to and departure from work for both Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs, engage Assistant Director or designee, if applicable
  • Assist the Assistant Director or designee in establishing hiring criteria and evaluating candidates for Pharmacy Technician positions, if applicable
  • Participate in the development of job description for Pharmacy Technician I, II, and Pharmacy Externs
  • Evaluate the Pharmacy Technician training program and assure the proper training of all Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs
  • Identify staff development needs for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs and prepare a plan to meet those needs, if applicable
  • Assist the Assistant Director or designee in performance evaluation feedback for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs annually, if applicable
  • Provide feedback to the Assistant Director or designee to facilitate the continuous evaluation of all processes
  • Exhibit good customer service skills and positive attitude to promote teamwork and to create a good work environment
  • Monitor Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs workflow to assure maintenance of high-performance standard

Operations
  • Assess the needs and priorities of various work areas of the pharmacy throughout the day, and assign Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs to meet the needs
  • Recognize normal ranges of medication and initiates corrective action as needed
  • Coordinate the ordering, reconciliation and maintenance of perpetual inventory. This would include the monitoring of all controlled substances
  • Facilitate monthly controlled substance inventory counts as designated by area Assistant/Associate Director.
  • Coordinate the ordering, reconciliation, delivery and billing of clinic floor stock
  • Maintain all office supplies, packing and shipping supplies for mail order prescription services, if applicable
  • Maintain all pharmacy software (automation) necessary for prescription processing on an as needed basis
  • Maintain all other instruments (balance, reconstitution apparatus) necessary for extemporaneous compounding of prescriptions, if applicable
  • Responsible for daily cash reports and deposits under the guidelines established
  • Responsible for maintaining the adequate cash amount in the pharmacy safe for daily cash exchanges and performing periodic counts to verify the amounts on hand
  • Coordinate and incorporate the procedures from various programs of the pharmacy into the daily workflow to assure efficiency in the pharmacy operation, if applicable
  • Generate monthly reports from pharmacy computer system as pertains to patient billing accounts, if applicable
  • Fully participate and support quality improvement initiatives and comply with all legal and regulatory requirements

Communications
  • Attend pharmacy staff meetings to discuss pharmacy operation and Pharmacy Technician issues, and to keep an open communication channel between Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Externs
  • Demonstrate good communication skills with all health care professionals in the clinical setting to assure appropriate patient care
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with patients under stressful situations
  • Demonstrate ability to resolve conflicts appropriately, which may include identifying and involving the appropriate health care professionals to assist the patient most efficiently
  • Demonstrate effective and timely communication skills with the Pharmacists and Assistant Director to fulfill operation needs
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

1. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.

2. Any one of the following that equals six (6)months:

A. Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

OR

B. Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

3. Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible work experience as a pharmacy technician, which included one (1) year of lead worker duties.
