YOUTH COUNCIL LEADER
YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City Manager's Youth Council aims to serve as a voice of power for youth in Worcester. The Youth Council strives to amplify the voices of youth; foster respect between adults and youth; advocate for youth's social emotional needs to be centered in all spaces serving youth; and motivate each other to grow, play, and thrive in our city of Worcester.

The Youth Council Leaders will represent their district and work with the supervision of the Division of Youth Opportunities Deputy Director and Community Engagement Specialist to implement Youth Council programming. Council Leaders will meet weekly, engage in training and workshops, attend community meetings, recruit youth and facilitate Youth Council general meetings, host and facilitate a series of youth town halls, and develop and implement a final civic/community action project.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS



  • Participate in weekly meetings with DYO staff, Mondays in person 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm and Wednesdays virtually 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
  • Attend community and city meetings.
  • Recruit youth for Youth Council's general assembly.
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and trainings for the general assembly.
  • Assist in the planning, outreach, facilitation, broadcasting, and evaluating the Worcester Youth Convention.
  • Participate in a community need/resource analysis to identify the top issues youth face and plan a final project/campaign around a chosen topic.
  • Engage the community in a final project or campaign meant to create positive change in the community with regards to programming and policy.
  • Report ad insights and recommendations to the City Manager and City Council and share back to the community at large.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



  • Prior experience in leadership roles at work, school, extracurricular activities, sports, etc., and will have a strong passion for justice and creating a positive social change in our community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships and networking skills with youth, colleagues, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative and follow through on commitments.
  • Ability to participate in twice-weekly meetings both in-person and virtually


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • Prior experience in a leadership role (work, school, extracurricular activities, sports, and/or related field)
  • Must be a student within the Worcester schools
  • Ability to pass CORI/SORI background check


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • One (1) year of experience facilitating and/or organizing youth activities and programming
  • Experience working with children and families from diverse cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities
  • Special interest in youth justice


SALARY: $15.00 hourly, part-time, temporary, non-benefitted.
