Job Overview
The Pressure Vessels and Systems (PVS) Engineer provides day-to-day technical responsibility of the pressure systems safety efforts for NASA and Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) related projects. Work Model: Onsite
Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Provides day-to-day technical responsibility of the pressure systems safety efforts for NASA and MAF related projects.
- Interfaces directly with the NASA Pressure Systems Manager in setting PVS strategies and responding to new requirements and dynamic priority changes.
- Responsible for identifying customer problems and issues, researching program requirements, and determining the most effective solution given technical qualifications and contractual requirements.
- Provides guidance to teammates and works collaboratively in the best interests of the customer.
- Maintains and updates center-wide PVS certification program encompassing simple, moderate, and complex systems and reports progress regularly to senior NASA and NSS management.
- Reviews, conducts, and evaluates pressure system engineering safety analyses and risk assessments; reviews submittals, design criteria, drawings, and documentation/ procedures for impacts and compliance with Government standards and requirements.
- Recommends abatement or mitigation actions to prevent hazards from resulting in failure.
- Prepares systems analyses in accordance with Government codes and standards, and delivers presentations as required.
- Reviews and approves system certification packages.
- May attend design reviews and technical interchange meetings to provide safety assessments and technical support.
- Develop budgets and estimates to maintain PVS core requirements as well as IDIQ projects.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Eight (8)+ years of experience and a BS in Engineering (i.e., mechanical or fluids). Eight years combined experience is required in the design, operation, maintenance, or repair of pressure vessels and/or pressure piping systems, and four years of experience managing projects.
- Preferred: MS in Engineering is desired and 8 years or more experience in the design, operation, maintenance, or repair of pressure vessels and/or pressure piping systems, and five years of experience managing projects.
- Knowledge of ASME and other PVS Codes and standards, related Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and NASA policies, requirements, and procedures associated with PVS.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
- Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).
- Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
- Must have, and maintain, a valid Real ID driver's license.
- Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment background check and drug screen test.

- API 520 Part I and Part II, Sizing, Selection, and Installation of Pressure-Relieving Devices in Refineries, requirements and analyses
- NFPA 51 High Pressure Cylinders.
- National Board Inspection Code NB-23, Part 1, 2, and 3, requirements and applicable analyses.
- Material compatibility assessments (e.g., oxidizer compatibility assessment, oxygen compatibility assessment).
- Application of nondestructive examination (NDE) methodologies for pressure vessels/systems based on their codes and standards of construction.\
- System and component field inspection/verification and walk-down against system P&ID.
- CGA E-4 Standard for Gas Pressure Regulators, requirements and analyses.
- Ability to learn and master NASA-STD-8719.17, NASA Requirements for Ground-Based Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems.
- Learn NASA-STD-8719.26, NASA Requirements for Ground Based Non-Code Metallic Pressure Vessels.
- Safe operation of high-pressure systems.
- ASME stress analysis, including pressure, external, thermal, dynamic loadings, etc.
- Statics and dynamics.
- Fracture Mechanics.
- Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems (PVS) fabrication, welding, inspection, etc. techniques and processes.
- PVS failure modes and damage mechanisms, and the NDE techniques and analyses that are used to identify precursors to those failure modes and to determine acceptable limits on operations to avoid them.
- Requires excellent communication skills and understands broad range of systems and risk as it applies to programmatic, technical and cost concerns.
- Ability to use typical Microsoft products (e.g., MS Word, Excel) to analyze, plan, and communicate work requirements.
- Interpersonal relationship building and customer interfacing skills are desired.
