Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Art & Art History at
UNC Chapel Hill is a vibrant hub for research, teaching, and creative exploration within the College of Arts & Sciences. Comprising both Art History and Studio Art, our department is home to 25 full-time faculty and 7 dedicated staff members. We offer a rich academic spectrum, including BA,
BFA, and
MFA degrees in Studio Art, as well as BA, MA, and joint MA/
MSLS and PhD programs in Art History. Guided by our mission make/frame/reveal we celebrate both the historical and creative sides of art. We embrace experiential learning, contextual understanding, diverse perspectives, and innovative approaches. As a uniquely interdisciplinary community of makers and interpreters, we investigate some of today's most pressing issues climate change, social justice, decolonial landscapes, and abolition fostering a creative environment dedicated to meaningful dialogue and change.
Art is our laboratory: a space for experimentation, reflection, analysis, and engagement. Our department's diverse expertise and methodology challenge students to think critically, be curious, inventive, thoughtful, and courageous. Position Summary |
The Department of Art & Art History is recruiting for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Studio Art, with a specialization in Printmedia. We seek an artist with a robust and dynamic practice, supported by an active record of exhibitions and publication that reflects a broad understanding of contemporary printmedia and its related disciplines. Candidates should possess technical expertise across a wide range of printmaking processes and an understanding of the conceptual and material possibilities that define the expanded field of printmedia. In addition to teaching core printmedia courses, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new courses that draw on their creative practice and interdisciplinary interests. These may include, but are not limited to, socially engaged practices, book arts, painting, drawing, or performance. There are also opportunities to collaborate with faculty across campus to design interdisciplinary courses that extend the reach of printmedia into new contexts. The teaching load is two courses per semester, and all studio faculty serve on several
MFA graduate committees per year. Studio faculty may also occasionally teach
MFA seminars, First Year Seminars and special topics courses as part of this teaching load. In addition to teaching and creative research, all faculty contribute to the department's shared responsibilities, including committee service, academic advising, and participation in departmental governance. Candidates should demonstrate a record of, or strong potential for, effective service and collective decision-making. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
MFA or equivalent terminal degree. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
The ideal candidate is a practicing artist with an excellent record of exhibition, college-level teaching expertise, and comprehensive knowledge of the contemporary visual art landscape, encompassing its technical, theoretical, political, and historical dimensions. Preference will be given to experimental and interdisciplinary artists who use printmaking and / or emerging approaches and new technologies of the field as central to their practice. |
