Position Summary
The Assistant Director of the College of Engineering Makerspace plays a key role in supporting for-credit instruction, laboratory operations, and user training within the Makerspace. This position assists with coordinating instructional activities, setting up laboratory tests and experiments, and updating instructional materials. The role is responsible for developing and implementing training protocols, authorizing qualified users, and ensuring safe and effective operation of all equipment. The specialist manages equipment, materials, and supplies; evaluates and recommends new purchases and upgrades; and oversees student workers in project fabrication and scheduling. In addition, this position contributes to the strategic development of processes and guidelines, assists with capital improvement projects, and represents the Makerspace through tours, events, and conferences.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with coordination of all for-credit instruction in the Makerspace.
  • Recommend and implement the setup of laboratory tests and experiments for graduate and undergraduate instructional laboratories.
  • Assist in updating laboratory manuals based on professor/course requirements.
  • Assist with the creation of procedures and protocols to properly train and authorize users in the operations of all equipment. Perform qualified user authorizations on specific equipment and operations.
  • Evaluate need for new equipment and make recommendations.
  • Evaluate laboratory equipment, examine and document performance.
  • Manage and provide recommendations for all laboratory equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Manage production of items in the Makerspace for user projects
  • Assigning student workers to fabricate needed items. Plans and manages student worker schedules.
  • Assist with the successful operation, safety, and maintenance of all equipment in the Makerspace
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of processes, procedures, and guidelines in support of the strategic goals and the operations of Makerspace.
  • Provide recommendations regarding new purchases and/or upgrades to existing equipment.
  • Leads tours and explain to others about the Makerspace and the equipment in it. Represents the Makerspace at external events and conferences
  • Advise and assist in the development and execution of capital improvement projects involving the labs and instructional facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field. Three years of experience in makerspace or prototyping shop.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience is university/college makerspace or machine shop preferred
