The Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy largely focuses on addressing two of the major existential problems of our times: climate change and entrenched urban inequalities. Our faculty and students draw on the tools of different disciplines (e.g., Urban Planning, Law, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, Economics, etc.) to understand the causes of these problems and develop solutions that lead to sustainable environments and socially just cities. Staff play a vital role in this mission by working closely with faculty and the department leadership to develop and enact policy. The incumbent will collaborate with the Social Ecology Graduate Affairs team, who provides general oversight, guidance, advisement, and leadership to staff and faculty administrators, as well as graduate students, related to and enrolled in one of the School's nine graduate programs.


Your Role on the Team

Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services. The incumbent will support the startup and launch of a new online Master of Public Administration (MPA) program within the Urban Planning and Public Policy Department in the School of Social Ecology. The role is focused heavily on outreach and recruitment, as well as building program infrastructure, program marketing, financial management, academic/student services and other professional responsibilities as required. May also support/advise on other self-supporting programs within the School of Social Ecology. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the School of Social Ecology (SE). Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department and school's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center or by the chair / dean and faculty of the school. Administers funds for student programs.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 1-3 years

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility / authorization for international students and scholars.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $65,000- $77,000 (Annual).
