Individual/Independent Consultant - Verbal Reasoning Item Writer

The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is seeking a highly skilled Verbal Reasoning Item Writer to support test content development for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), a high-stakes, nationally administered assessment. The Verbal Reasoning Item Writer will support the item writing process. Item writing involves developing reading passages with multiple-choice questions intended to assess the critical reasoning skills of test takers. The ideal independent consultant has teaching experience at an introductory level with undergraduate populations, with a preference for more experience. AIR will contract directly with the Independent Consultant under a consulting purchase order agreement.

This is a remote position. The Independent Consultant must be available for coordination with a U.S.-based team.

Scope of work includes:

The Verbal Reasoning Item Writer will ensure developing of high-quality test passages and questions.The Independent consultant will work in collaboration with the Content Editor responsible for the Verbal Reasoning section of the exam. The responsibilities for the Independent Consultant position include:



  • Develop Verbal Reasoning test passages and questions as assigned by the AIR Content Editor.
  • Submit assignments online for AIR review and make revisions as requested.


Anticipated Workload:

This is a flexible, online contract position that entails around 10 hours per assignment with approximately 4-6 assignments per year, with the potential for additional assignments.

Qualifications:



  • PhD (or ABD) in a Humanities or Social Science Field. Humanities fields might include English/Literature, Comparative Literature, American Studies, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Art History, or other related fields. Social Science fields, as classified by the client, might include History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Government, or other related fields.
  • At least one-year teaching experience at the introductory level with undergraduate populations, with a preference for more experience.
