Hiring Range:

Mechanic I: $27.74/hourly - $31.21/hourly

Mechanic II: $32.96/hourly - $37.08/hourly

Salary Range:

Mechanic I: $27.74/hourly- $41.62/hourly

Mechanic II: $32.96/hourly - $49.44/hourly

Position Summary: Performs various technical, mechanical, and administrative duties at the journeyman mechanic level for the Parks and Open Space Department consistent with the organization's values and mission statement.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision of the Parks Operations Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

Mechanic

* Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of a variety of parks equipment including the repair of electric, gasoline and diesel powered equipment.

* Work may include the repair of suspension, hydraulic systems, fuel delivery, brakes and cooling equipment systems, transmissions, drive/power train and differentials.

* Washes vehicles and takes other appropriate maintenance measures, as needed.

* Vehicle maintenance includes tractors, loaders, skid-steers, vehicles, trucks (light and heavy), trailers, mowers, snow removal equipment, etc.

Preventative Maintenance

* Monitors, coordinates, and performs preventative maintenance duties in compliance with established schedules and procedures.

* Maintains records and logs on equipment maintenance. Enters repair orders, and runs service reports.

* Prepares oil samples on equipment.

* Performs field service, including grinding, sharpening and other maintenance on various equipment.

* Maintains parts inventory, including ordering of stock.

* Performs other duties relative to preventive maintenance as required.

* Ensures that staff inspect vehicles and equipment daily prior to use for fluid levels, tire pressure, wear on attachments or other problems, and provides training to staff on PM best practices.

Diagnostics

* Examines and analyzes gasoline, electric, and diesel powered vehicle parts and/or units to identify problems, and provides recommendations or actions for repair.

* Reads, studies, interprets, and determines schematics for diagnosis and repair.

Department Support

* Assists in training of the work force in equipment operation, maintenance, and safety.

* Maintains shop and storage orderliness and cleanliness.

* Performs other duties relative to equipment maintenance as required or assigned.

* Attends meetings/training sessions as necessary.

* Assists in Fleet management and fleet purchasing.

* Demonstrates flexibility by supporting various departments as operational needs arise, maintaining strong collaborative relationships with Streets Department mechanics and the Fleet Operations Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: One to Three years of experience as a vehicle/equipment mechanic on all types of gasoline and diesel powered equipment or equivalent training.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web based platforms.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

  • Valid Colorado CDL driver's license class B with tanker endorsement. Air Brake inspector certification or ability to achieve one within 6 months of hire.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position may be filled at either the Mechanic I or Mechanic II level based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.

NOTE: This position requires a drug test (to be completed at PROCOM - Glenwood Springs), a physical examination (at Grand River Health Clinic West - Parachute), and a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination, a drug test and Criminal Background Check.

NOTE: This position is required to comply with state, federal and local regulations concerning Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to holders of Commercial Driver's License (CDLs) holders which includes but is not limited to: pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing and a completed, satisfactory previous employer reference form.

Position Type and Work Hours:

* Regular full time, hours may vary with workload.

* Evenings/Weekends will occasionally (monthly) be required depending on department needs and special projects.

* On-Call: May be required to perform on-call duty and must be immediately available for 24 hour alarm response. Such activities include but are not limited to snow removal sandbagging cleaning up debris, and fallen trees.

Work Environment:

* Indoors: Works is performed in a well-lit, heated, and vented shop. Exposure to some fumes, dust and noise is present.

* Outdoors/Off-Site: Subject to repair equipment outside in all types of weather conditions. Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.

Physical Demands:

Visual Acuity: Ability to bring objects into focus.

Balancing: Maintaining equilibrium.

Bending: Bending or position oneself to move an object from one level to another.

Carrying: Transporting or moving up to 50 lb. equipment, etc., unassisted.

Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Climbing: Ascending or descending stationary objects.

Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Performing work through using two or more body parts or other devices.

Gripping/Grasping: Ability to apply pressure with fingers and palm.

Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, through use of hands, fingers, or other means. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

Hearing: Perceiving and comprehending the nature and direction of sounds.

Kneeling: Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees

Lifting: Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds from one level to another is performed regularly, with occasional lifting of heavier items up to 100 pounds. Tasks also include light work involving objects up to 20 pounds, with lifting occurring in various directions as required.
