The Technical Services Department provides essential infrastructure that supports UC Irvine Libraries resources in all formats, including print and electronic resources. Our services include licensing, acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, processing, and repairs. We maintain the UC Irvine catalog and work to ensure resource access and discoverability. Technical Services includes the following five units: Accounting and Print Monograph Acquisitions; Electronic Resources Acquisitions; Catalog Maintenance, Physical Processing & Electronic Resources Cataloging; Physical Resources Cataloging & Metadata; and Serial Acquisitions & Binding/Book Repairs.


Your Role on the Team

Under the general supervision of the unit's Library Professional 4, the incumbent updates and corrects online catalog records following established guidelines and procedures, concentrating on the following assignments: SRLF deposit, withdrawals, transfers, monographic and serial holdings maintenance, and error correction. Processes gift materials, added copies, added volumes, and replacements.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Knowledge enabling the performance of a full range of specialized duties in a functional are or specialized subject matter field to perform bibliographic and holdings maintenance.
  • Advanced problem solving and decision-making ability.
  • Academic preparation that provides a broad knowledge base sufficient to perform bibliographic and holdings maintenance
  • Ability to work with a variety of languages other than English well enough to interpret details of bibliographic descriptions.
  • Working knowledge of an Integrated Library System.
  • General knowledge of library practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of cataloging rules and resources (Resource Description and Access, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd Ed. Rev., Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, MARC21 and local policies), sufficient to resolve bibliographic holdings problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent keyboarding and proofreading skills with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of alphabetical and subject filing systems
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to interact diplomatically with staff and the public.
  • Ability to manage work to prevent backlogs and meet established standards and timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a good attendance record.
  • Ability to perform successfully in a production oriented environment.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to support inclusiveness within UC Irvine Libraries and the campus.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of Alma cataloging module.
  • Working knowledge of University of California policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of OCLC searching and editing procedures. Desired problems.

Special Conditions:

  • This position requires frequent pushing/pulling of large heavy book trucks
  • Working at a computer terminal for extended periods of time
  • Frequent shelving of books, or removal of books from shelves that are above shoulder height and below knee height.
