Job Description

General Summary:

We are seeking a Mass Spectrometrist to join the Chemical Biology group in Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The ideal candidate is a motivated, detail orientated, life-long learner with strong technical expertise in mass spectrometry, chemical biology, and analytical biology. The successful candidate will creatively use their skills to answer a broad range of scientific challenges and questions in small molecule discovery and elucidation of biological mechanisms. This team member will have the opportunity to participate in a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and fast-paced research environment striving for transformative new therapies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Execute a wide range of cellular and biochemical approaches to enrich, deplete, label, extract, and prepare analytes for mass spectrometry. This includes proteomic, chemoproteomic, lipid, and small molecule workflows.
  • Design and execution of studies interrogating protein-protein interactions, chemo-proteomics, signaling, and homeostasis at the proteome-wide scale using DIA, PASEF, and DDA methods.
  • Create high throughput PRM assays for classically difficult to measure analytes to enable target discovery, hit validation, biomarker and mechanism of action studies. This may include PTMs, non-genomic sequences, lipids, and low abundance peptides and small molecules.
  • Create data analysis workflows for rapid interpretation, visualization, reporting and QC of mass spectrometry data.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot LC-MS equipment, specifically, Thermo and Bruker systems.
  • Teamwork in a multi-disciplinary matrixed environment, collaborating on shared scientific questions. Proactively communicating ideas, plans, and results.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Deep technical knowledge and experience to independently generate, optimize, execute, and troubleshoot LC-MS methods for a wide variety of experimental paradigms and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of quantitative rigor regarding instrument performance, assay figures of merit, and statistical analyses.
  • Experience with quantitative analysis of mass spectrometry software such as: Spectronaut, Skyline, Proteome Discoverer, and MsFragger
  • Basic molecular biology skills and experience; cell culture, immunoprecipitation, protein assays, etc
  • The ability to communicate ideas and updates clearly and concisely across various audience levels. Articulate in cell and molecular biology, analytical quantification, and drug discovery concepts.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in life sciences with 3-5 years hands-on experience in 'omics mass spectrometry and biology. Candidates with an MSc with 5+ years or BS with 8+ years of relevant experience will also be considered.

Pay Range:

$103,200 - $154,800
