JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Lead Lifeguard

LOCATION/DEPT: Kroc Center

REPORTS to (TITLE): Aquatics Operations Manager

PAY GRADE: 203

PAY RATE 18.11-21.74

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Managers this position will observe swimmers, protect life, prevent accidents, enforce regulations, and do related work as required. This person will make sure that the swimmers are provided a pleasant, safe, and stimulating experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:



  1. Guest Services

    1. Interact with guests in a manner that ensures the most enjoyable experience for all RJKCCC guests.
    2. Direction and answers to questions is provided, as needed.
    3. Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem solving.
    4. Provide oversight to the day-to-day activities of the aquatics programs and facilities.
    5. Maintain all public and restricted areas in a neat and clean fashion'
    6. Maintain activities on schedule ensuring that events and activities begin and end on time.
    7. See that all equipment assigned to the aquatic facilities is maintained and properly utilized.


  2. Follow and enforce equipment checkout program.
  3. Report defects, necessary repairs, etc
  4. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  5. Maintain the Code of Ethics policy established for the Kroc Center.

    1. Assist and direct Guests in moving about the facility to avoid crowded conditions and maximize service efficiency.
    2. Incoming calls must be answered quickly and politely, basic questions answered or more in-depth inquiries referred to an appropriate staff member.


  6. Maintain a safe working environment.

    1. Ensure Guest safety by immediately correcting and/or reporting any potentially unsafe conditions.
    2. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
    3. Report all harmful problems with facilities to the Aquatics Manager.

      1. Ensure liability injuries are reported timely and according to procedure.
      2. Generate legible and accurate accident and incident reports as required.


    4. Report any suspicion of Child Abuse to the appropriate supervisor and Child Protective Services.
    5. Coordinate response and direction to members in emergency situations.
    6. Supervise lifeguard rotation to ensure surveillance of all areas of the pool. Ensure that lifeguards and shallow water attendants comply with American Red Cross & Salvation Army Emergency Action Plan Protocol.
    7. Report to Coordinators, Asst. Aquatic Managers, and Manager detailed report of any non-compliance issues of aquatics staff while on duty. Comply with Aquatics Open & Close Procedures.
    8. Ensure that incident reports are accurate and detailed for aquatics management staff to review.
    9. Assist Aquatics Management in devising and facilitating In-Service trainings.


  7. Work in a cooperative manner with the other staff of the RJKCCC programs, discussing any problems that may be occurring with the Aquatics Director.
  8. Refer guests with spiritual needs or questions to appropriate officer/pastor.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES



  • Education: High School Diploma required.
  • Experience: Four years combined experience as a Lifeguard, Lifeguard/Instructor or Assistant Aquatics Manager.


Licenses/Certifications:

Required Licenses:



  • Possession of an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certificate for Infants/Adults.
  • Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.
  • Possession of an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate.
  • Must be Safe from Harm certified within 30 days of HIRE.


Skills/Abilities:



  • Must have the ability to swim with proficiency and endurance. Must successfully complete a 200-yard swim in less than 5 minutes, tread water for 2 minutes (no hands). And retrieve a 10 lbs. dive brick from the bottom and swim 10 yards with it.
  • Knowledge of basic swimming techniques and ability to teach swimming to all age groups
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self starter.
  • An attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of the Center and The Salvation Army.
  • Have the ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling and education including but not limited to:

    • Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages.
    • Sensitivity to children's individual needs.
    • Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
    • Follow proper safety rules and procedures.
    • Maintain physical condition, audio-visual discrimination and perception and mental capacity appropriate to the working conditions and the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
    • Ability to handle security and crisis situations, calmly.
    • Ability to seek supervision and use it consistently.
    • The capability to teach swimming to all age groups.
    • A willingness to promote the mission of The RJKCCC.




RELATIONSHIPS

In contacts related to this position's duties this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Director with some freedom to plan, schedule and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines.

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

JOB LIMITATIONS



  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work in an indoor pool environment including prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping and bending; prolonged periods in the water, work on slippery and uneven surfaces; ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and move up to 100 pounds during rescues; may be exposed to chlorine and other pool chemicals; prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity; have mobility, acute vision, acute hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties performed.
