Achieve your goals with this Tax Examiner 1 position in the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (DOR), Bureau of Business Taxpayer Accounting (BBTA), Motor and Alternative Fuel Tax (MAFT) Division. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will learn to perform tax examination and clerical functions at the Riverfront Office Center (a.k.a. "the ROC") for the MAFT Division's External Account Clarification (EAC) Section. Your work will help verify that operators of qualified motor vehicles, most commonly truckers, can get the fuel tax credentials they need under Motor Carriers Road Tax/International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA). Qualified operators only pay specific taxes fuel taxes and get decals to display on their vehicles. You will review new account and supplemental applications to decide if an account is eligible to receive new, replacement, or temporary decals; if all pertinent information and payments have been received; and whether an account is in compliance with requirements.

Your work will involve learning to answer the phone to assist callers, conduct research in our database to help identify and obtain any missing information, and sort applications and payments for batch processing or direct data entry. Communication is key as you will work with taxpayers and other state offices to help ensure qualified taxpayers can get the credentials and make the payments they need. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • On site parking is available.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $40,685 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of general office work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
