The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a renewable three-year appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor in Hindi-Urdu language, beginning July 1, 2026. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (
DAMES) is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences. Our mission is to serve the undergraduate populations by offering majors and minors in a range of Asian and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. We also offer an MA program with two tracks: Interdisciplinary Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Chinese Studies. In addition, our faculty conduct research in the field of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and contribute to the College, the University, and the state through service and leadership. |
Position Summary |
The Teaching Assistant Professor will teach six language courses per academic year, from introductory to advanced levels, and will actively collaborate in Hindi-Urdu program development and activities and perform other departmental service. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
This position requires a master's degree in Hindi, Urdu, or Hindi-Urdu, in linguistics focused on teaching Hindi-Urdu as a second language, or in a related field. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Native or near-native proficiency in Hindi-Urdu and English, as well as strong proficiency in both Hindi (Devanagari) and Urdu (Nastaliq) scripts are required. The position also requires familiarity with the methods and technologies used in teaching Hindi-Urdu as a second language at the university level, particularly in the US. |
