Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Philosophy is committed to advancing and transmitting an understanding of fundamental questions of reality, knowledge, and value, and is an essential element of a liberal education. The Department of Philosophy looks at the history of struggles to answer these fundamental questions and develops analytical and critical resources for engaging these questions as they arise in individual and common experience. There is a permanent faculty count of 21 and a fixed-term faculty count of 5 (depending on academic year and funding availability) who provide instruction on both the Undergraduate and graduate level. The Department currently enrolls hundreds of students every fall, spring and summer and houses the PPE Program (Philosophy, Political Science and Economics) and the Parr Center for Ethics. There are also 37 enrolled graduate student teaching assistants who provide instruction to undergraduates throughout the academic year. Both the faculty and the graduate students are actively engaged in research in areas including ethics, political philosophy, ancient philosophy, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language.
Position Summary
The Department of Philosophy seeks to appoint a non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor. The position's primary responsibility will be to design and teach undergraduate courses that satisfy the Data, Culture, and Society ( DCS) requirement in the College's Data Science minor. We seek a colleague with expertise at the intersection of philosophy and data for example ethics of data and AI, philosophy of technology, social/political philosophy of data, or related areas who can help students place data and computation in social, cultural, and ethical contexts. The successful candidate will contribute centrally to Carolina's growing Data Science program, while also strengthening Philosophy's undergraduate curriculum.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Ph.D in Philosophy or related field within a year of being hired.
