Manages all terminal operations in accordance with plans within the
parameters of customer requirements, management direction and safe
working practices to achieve maximum levels of productivity and
customer service by optimum utilisation of recourses (Large Operations).
OT Project Manager Business Unit: Department: APM Terminals Elizabeth Project Execution Job classifications: Reports to: Level 5 Head of Asset Delivery PURPOSE: The OT Project Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our automation products, overseeing budget management, maintaining critical stakeholder relationships, and managing a team of deployment engineers. This role combines extensive technical expertise with a profound sense of personal ownership and includes accountability for developing and executing the project's OT scope. This role also requires strong leadership to drive global deployment consistency, effective change management to secure stakeholder buy-in, and close collaboration across multiple geographies, vendors, and functions. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: Overall responsibilities are the following:
- Realize the deployment in support of the product value proposition and as per plan to the terminal and end customers
- Oversee project planning, execution, and monitoring to ensure that objectives are met within scope, schedule, and budget.
- Deliver Product deployment approach and plan, including assurance of product integrity, integration and testing
- Ensure due compliance, safety and other relevant regulations to be adhered to during the deployment
- Maximize and continuously improve the level of consistency between product deployments in Port Elizabeth.
- Continuously ensure the deployment fulfils all site-specific needs as defined in consultation with the project and terminal teams within the product blueprint for site deployment.
- Develop and maintain the Project Management Plan (PMP) for automation projects, outline project scope, objectives, schedules, resource allocation, change management, risk management, and other essential project management details.
- Manage and lead a team of Automation experts ensuring they stay engaged, motivated, and aligned with project goals.
- To operationalize global, cross-functional product definitions within terminal specific conditions including any related site-specific configurations that need to be aligned between global and local stakeholders
- To lead the deployment team to effectively implement the given product(s) in the live terminal operations as per plan and without local business disruption as well as resolve any related challenges on a day-to-day basis
- To coordinate between deployment team members, suppliers, product teams, project team, and terminal staff to ensure the deployment meets strategic objectives and the deployment plan
- To define deployment specific performance criteria, including tracking and reporting of progress.
- To provide regular reporting on project progress, budget status, and key performance indicators to senior management.
- To work closely with other Automation Project Managers and Project Execution globally to establish a common deployment approach and continuously improve same, make use of the best practices and ensure the relevant framework is implemented / followed as applicable
- To work with suppliers' deployment teams to proactively ensure their delivery is meeting the APM Terminals plans/targets and drive the local product integration and related alignment process between suppliers within the boundaries of product integrity
- To manage the product integrity process to ensure deployment success while contributing to product maturity/blueprint
- To actively drive and engage in the deployment process from roadmap creation to go-live and finally stable operations
- To provide regular demonstrations of the deployment to senior stakeholders
- To oversee the first line of support for the deployment given at the terminal(s) until go-live and remain involved until Operations stability
- To oversee the definition of and participate in all testing milestones and approve the outcomes
- To continuously monitor all deployment related risks and opportunities and lead their mitigation / exploitation, delegate as appropriate
- To contribute to local product adoption by facilitating capability building/knowledge transfer to terminal staff as part of the deployment
CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE Necessary to fulfil the requirements of the position:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Project Management, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- Professional expertise and deep knowledge in the context of automation. Experience in port automation / modernization preferrable.
- Proven experience in project management, particularly in container terminal industry or related fields.
- PMP, PRINCE2, or Scaled Agile certifications preferred
- Ability to develop and maintain comprehensive Project Management Plans (PMPs)
- Strong technical background with a deep understanding of automation technologies Including TOS, Equipment Control Systems, PLC/SCADA for industrial automation, Integration expertise (API/Middleware), network and infra and understanding industrial communication protocols (OPC UA), wireless network (5G) and cybersecurity and testing and commissioning. (FAT/SAT/UAT)
- English proficiency
- High familiarity and proven proficiency of delivering results within project/product deployment environment
- Versatile resource management and planning skills
- Strong prioritization abilities and can-do mindset
- Methodological know-how to lead iterative design, development and testing cycles from end-to-end throughout the deployment
- Ability to balance short-term deliverables and long-term business objectives
- Ability to solve complex problems daily basis and in a structured manner
- People leadership skills for driving success of deployment teams
- Strong stakeholder management & communication skills
- Continuous focus to drive change management as key enabler for stakeholder buy-in and successful deployment outcomes

REPORTING AND SCOPE:
- The direct reporting line will be to the Head of Assets Delivery (on site).
- The functional reporting line is to the Senior Deployment Manager, Global OT.
