Duration: 10 + months Contract

Pay Rate: $23/Hour on W2 Without Benefits

Job Description:

  • Under supervision and/or direction, maintain assigned instructional laboratory and support and coordinate the daily operations and activities. The work involves setting up and organizing work areas for classroom instruction, and coordinating with and providing instructional assistance services to faculty to ensure laboratory exercises demonstrate learning, scientific, and/or technical principles to support classroom instruction.
  • Assist in providing technical assistance to students and faculty performing research and accessing instructional resources. Plan activities, assess inventory and maintain supplies and materials, check/maintain equipment and assist with guiding students regarding proper use of equipment. The instructional lab assistant follows specific guidelines developed by supervisor in providing instructional support in the laboratory.
  • Primary contacts include college faculty, staff, and students. Essential functions include assemble/set-up and break-down laboratory experiments, demonstrations, and practical exercises in accordance with guidance from the academic department in order to support instructional objectives.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents needed for laboratory work. Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment. Perform minor maintenance or troubleshooting on specialized laboratory equipment. Dispose of waste chemicals and/or special medical waste in accordance with applicable hazardous waste regulations and procedures. Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals/products used in laboratories and laboratory results.
  • Maintain/feed live organisms/biological specimens. Maintain laboratory areas, equipment storage, test equipment, tools, supply/stock rooms, etc.


Role & Responsibilities:

  • Receive/unpack and put away deliveries of materials. Ensure security of equipment storage and stock rooms. Monitor/inventory equipment and supplies. Inspect and test safety equipment and supplies. Identify maintenance issues for reporting to appropriate authorities. Assist instructors and students during labs as necessary by ensuring the safety of the laboratory set-up and associated equipment.
  • Provide input as requested for updating laboratory preparation books and guidance.
  • May research equipment for laboratory use for input into purchase. May maintain statistics regarding student laboratory use and prepare reports and other written materials regarding operation of laboratories. May supervise student laboratory assistants. Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned instructional laboratory discipline including tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions. Knowledge of instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory including obtaining materials and recordkeeping. Knowledge and skill in current and applicable hardware, software and peripheral equipment including personal computer, word processing, spreadsheets and Windows-based applications. Skill in effective communication (written and verbal).
  • Skilled in operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Skill in problem solving and mechanical aptitude. Skill in customer service. Ability to operate and perform maintenance on laboratory equipment. Ability to recognize hazards and eliminate or reduce potential risks. Ability to organize work and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to work effectively, communicate (written and verbal) to exchange information with others. Ability to work effectively with others.


Minimum Education, Training and Experience:

  • Required Bachelor's degree in an academic field related to the assigned area(s) plus two (2) years of related experience. The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • OSHA training or knowledge of OSHA laboratory standards may be required. Physical Demands Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as applicable. Ability to lift, carry, push or pull heavy objects (weighing 20 - 50 pounds) regularly. Ability to walk, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel, push, pull, lift, grasp and repetitive motions.
