West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), part of the WVU system of campuses located in Beckley, WV is currently accepting applications for a Dean of Students.

About the Opportunity

The Dean of Students directs all Student Life programs and coordination of personnel services and programs related to WVU Tech's student development efforts. This role sets the strategic direction for student life programs and makes recommendations on related policies.

What You'll Do

  • Directs, manages and supervises the Student Life components of WVU Tech including, but not limited to the
    Upward Bound, Student Success Programs and Counseling, Student Support Services, Residence Life, Dining
    Services, Learning Communities, Student Activities, Cooperative Education, Career Services, International
    Student Advising, and Public Safety
  • Establishes and implements short and long range department goals, objectives, policies, and operating
    procedures; monitors and evaluates program effectiveness; effects changes required for improvement.
  • Designs, establishes and maintains staffing and an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the
    department function and recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates department staff.
  • Plans, implements, and assesses student development efforts with all elements of the WVU Tech community
    and all facets of campus life.
  • Represents WVU Tech to various institutional divisions as well as to government agencies, funding agencies,
    students and/or the general public/ local community.
  • Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity
    analysis.
  • Overseas the overall operations of the unit(s) reporting to this position.
  • Recommends and participates in the development of the university policies and procedures; may serve on the
    President's Cabinet as well as University planning and policy making committees and internal and external
    committees and organizations as directed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Overall responsibility for administering the policies and regulations of the college as they pertain to students,
    including internal college judicial and disciplinary procedures
  • Supports a positive climate in the student service area among the staff and promote cooperation with other
    functional area of the college.
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in student affairs, higher education administration, public administration, counseling or closely related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in higher education student services, including management and supervision
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within the community

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the community
  • Program planning and implementation skills
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, interpersonal and oral/written and presentational skills
  • Ability to build relationships with faculty, students, parents, staff and counselors
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and direct effective recruitment strategies and programs targeting undergraduate students
  • Ability to act calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement short and long range goals
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
  • Ability to organize, meet deadlines, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritize
  • Ability to plan and evaluate programs
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
