Essential Job Duties |
Wellness and Recreation is seeking enthusiastic students to support facilitators on the challenge course. The apprentice will be introduced to skills and tools to gain technical and soft skills to progress into more advanced roles.
Wellness and Recreation commits to foster a learning environment for our student employees that cultivate the skills of ethical reasoning, critical thinking, teamwork, initiative and professionalism. Programs and facilities are student run with professional coaching. The goal is to help develop student's transferable skills and create a supportive and challenging environment for them to succeed in and out of the classroom.
Responsibilities
* Educate NC State students, faculty, staff and community about outdoor recreation, including outdoor activities, destinations, equipment, and Outdoor Adventures programs (including trips, climbing wall, challenge course, and equipment rentals)
* Attend 40 hours of initial challenge course training
* Develop and facilitate a repertoire of games, activities and initiatives
* Develop facilitation and debrief skills
* Develop high course technical skills
* Assist in challenge course set up and break down
* Develop an understanding of the safety concerns and facilitation for each challenge course element
* Maintain a log of trainings and observations |

Guideline Enforcement: Understand and enforce Wellness and Recreation and area specific guidelines. Risk Management: Knowledge and implementation of emergency action plan. Training and Meetings: Attend required training and monthly staff meetings. Community: Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests. Support: Perform other related duties to support the overall functioning of the department.
Working Conditions
Environment: Both indoors and outdoors with potential exposure to adverse weather. Physical: Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly, and working at height (over 30 feet). Sensory: Potentially loud and busy work environment that requires strong communication and observation skills. Schedule: Flexibility in your availability is needed to potentially work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and breaks. Safety: Exposure to potential safety hazards and adherence to the emergency action plan to mitigate risk.
Time Commitment: This position requires you to work a minimum of four challenge courses and teambuilding programs per semester. Schedule Requirements: This role requires consistent availability on Fridays and weekends, with a preference for mid-week daytime hours.
