The Broad Institute, Genomics Platform is seeking a Senior Principal Software Engineer to help lead our Data Analysis & Operations team.

This position will be instrumental in the development of our high scale cloud-based orchestration platform for running genomics pipelines and performing data delivery.

An ideal candidate will help design, build, and maintain the necessary infrastructure, as well as, coordinate and lead the technical activities needed to support exciting new projects on the platform, for both internal and external stakeholders. This is a fast-paced role that sits in the intersection of engineering, science, and business. A successful candidate will need to work effectively across multiple departments, partners, and with a wide community of computational biologists and medical/cancer geneticists. We're looking for a team player that thrives on opportunity, adjusts well to change, and has the passion to make themselves, their teammates, and our partners better.

Here at Broad our collaborators are large-scale institutions (government, industry, academic, and philanthropic) that partner with us to generate clinical and genomic data, build new algorithms, and make it all available to researchers through our open-source analysis platform. We routinely partner with organizations across the biomedical ecosystem as well as scientists in our local MIT, Harvard, and affiliated hospital neighborhood.

Everything that goes on at the Broad, almost without exception, involves the use of specialized software. Software engineers create our advanced algorithms, deliver solid infrastructure, and high quality portals. Software engineers at the Broad Institute are highly valued and classified as Staff Scientists.

MINIMUM YEARS OF EXPERIENCE & OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science or related field with 15+ years of software development experience.
  • Proven ability to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems.
  • Ability to design, write, and read technical documents.
  • Track record of being able to deliver (or overdeliver) on time.
  • Comfortable presenting and communicating technical solutions to non-technical, client stakeholders.
  • Capable of understanding and translating technical requirements.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and domains.
  • A focus on outcomes and customer success.

SKILLS / TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with cloud environments (eg. AWS, GCP)
  • Familiarity with Apache Airflow a plus.
  • Experience integrating complex systems together.
  • Experience with multiple programming languages (especially Python and Java)
  • Experience working with relational databases and in writing SQL queries.
  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging complex systems.
  • Experience with security practices and within regulatory environments.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to perform effectively in a fast paced environment required.
  • Must be able to handle a variety of tasks, effectively solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and be able to shift priorities rapidly.

The expected base salary range for this position as listed above is based on a 40 hour per week schedule. Broad provides pay ranges representing its reasonable and good faith estimate of what the organization reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary based on factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, education, qualifications, and other factors permissible by law.
