McMinnville, OR (AMG) - ASU How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW? A Level 1 Air Separation Unit (ASU) cryogenic plant technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment that separates atmospheric air into gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and argon using extremely low temperatures. A technician in this entry-level role typically works under supervision to monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot plant equipment.
Plant operation and monitoring
  • Conduct equipment checks and inspections during operational rounds.
  • Monitor gauges, flow meters, temperatures, and pressures from both the control room and field equipment.
  • Log readings, track inventory levels of stored cryogenic liquids, and report any operational deviations.
  • Transfer liquefied gases between storage tanks.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance (PMs), such as cleaning and inspecting equipment.
  • Assist higher-level technicians and engineers with equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Utilize a computerized maintenance management system (SAP/PM) to enter work orders.
  • Help troubleshoot basic mechanical, electrical, and process problems.
Safety and compliance
  • Handle cryogenic liquids and high-pressure gases following strict safety protocols.
  • Follow and enforce all safety, health, and environmental guidelines.
  • Isolate equipment for maintenance and apply proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping standards.
  • Receive and document bulk shipments of liquefied gases.

  • A high school diploma or GED is typically required.
  • Many employers prefer an associate's degree in process technology or a related field, or relevant military experience.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation aptitude is essential for understanding and working with plant equipment.

  • Mechanical aptitude: The ability to operate, maintain, and perform basic repairs on industrial equipment.
  • Troubleshooting skills: The ability to methodically diagnose and solve equipment issues.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous record-keeping, monitoring, and adherence to procedures are necessary.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication is important for working in a team, coordinating with other departments, and documenting activities.
  • Self-starter/Initiative: The ability to work independently to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptability: A willingness and ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and to respond to emergency call-outs.
Physical and technical requirements
  • Physical fitness: Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), climb stairs and ladders, and work in tight spaces.
  • Computer proficiency: Familiarity with basic computer software and HMI/DCS systems for monitoring plant operations.
  • Reading schematics: The ability to read and interpret piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs) and other technical documents.
