Job Summary


Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace. May include industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational safety, environmental health, pest control, laboratory safety, hazardous materials control, hazardous waste management, emergency services and preparedness, fire safety, radiological safety, environmental protection including air, water and soil quality, and other EH&S programs and policies; or provides technical support for these programs.

Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.
Applies professional knowledge and expertise in Environment of Care (EOC), fire and life safety, hazardous materials and waste management, and general Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) principles to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational standards. Serves as the lead for one or more assigned EOC program areas, including coordination of fire alarm and suppression system testing,

Manages Clinical Technologies staff to configure, maintain, and
integrate technology for a clinical function through defining
individual goals and reviewing work meets quality and timeline
standards. Advises employees on managing equipment, device
integration issues, troubleshooting problems, resolving incidents, providing top customer service, and adjust staffing patterns as necessary

Mangages daily and long term operations of the the BIS to ensure consistency in operations and effectively collaborate with the clinical functions being serviced. In this respect, manages BIS technical teams to configure and maintain technology for a clinical function through defining individual goals and reviewing work to ensure quality and timeline standards. Advises employees on managing equipment issues, troubleshooting problems, resolving incidents, and providing top customer service.
BIS Manages fiscal, material and human resources within defined budget, ensuring clinical technology is wisely purchased. Collaborates to develop, maintain, and operate the medical technology replacement cycle and its associated capital budget. Establishes efficient, intra-departmental purchasing procedures.

Recommends changes in staffing, executes recruiting and onboarding, verifying new hires meet standards. Updates job descriptions and career series to maintain accuracy. Conducts performance evaluations, defines development goals, and takes the lead in conducting counseling and disciplinary actions for all BIS staff; Collaborates with senior staff
Promotes professional growth and advancement for BIS staff, implementing division's professional development, training initiatives and educational programs including internal classes and online training modules. Provides mentorship to emerging and new Clinical Engineering leaders to smooth the transition from technical roles to formal leadership roles.
Partners with the Director of BIS and with Clinical Leaders to implement policies and procedures for coordination of equipment management and workflows across the health system. Develops Service Level Agreements with respective customers to maintain an accurate medical device inventory, and clearly define roles, responsibilities and service delivery plans; Collaborates with the leadership Clinical Systems Engineering team in determining resources needed for on-going and future technology projects
Participates as a member or advisor on committees related to biomedical equipment, product evaluation, and / or safety.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,200 - $130,800 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Develops, implements, and monitors Environment of Care (EOC) programs including fire and life safety, hazardous materials and waste management, and construction risk mitigation.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates routine testing, inspections, and maintenance of fire life safety systems with Facilities, Engineering, and external contractors.
  • Monitors compliance with infection control risk assessments (ICRA) and pre-construction risk assessments (PCRA) during construction and renovation activities; performs ongoing inspections to identify and resolve environmental hazards.
  • Responds to fire system activations, natural disasters, and emergency incidents on a call-back or after-hours basis, supporting emergency response and recovery operations.
  • Conducts viable air sampling and particle count surveys in coordination with Infection Prevention, ensuring timely reporting and compliance with standards for sterile and critical environments.
  • Oversees hazardous materials and medical waste handling processes, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and disposal in compliance with Cal/OSHA, EPA, and hospital policy
