This Position reports to:

R&D Department Lead

You will be part of Powertrain & Digitalization team at ABB Corporate Research in Vasteras, Sweden.

At Corporate Research we lead the innovation within ABB and our task is to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. We work in close collaboration with other research centers, our business areas: Motion, Process Automation, Robotics & Discrete Automation and Electrification, as well academic and industrial partners.

In our creative and highly skilled team we develop, design, build and test new concepts and prototypes of physical and digital powertrains consisting of electric energy source, electrical motor, electric drive, and a selected application.

  • Period: January-July 2026 (max. 6 months duration)
  • Number of credits: 30 ECTS
  • Number of students: 1
  • Location: On site at ABB Corporate Research in Vasteras, Sweden

Your role and responsibilities

  • Literature review of Monolithic Bidirectional Switches (M-BDS) based converters
  • Investigating new M-BDS converter topologies
  • Developing average and switching models of the converters
  • Proposing new converter and control algorithm
  • Converter model and control algorithm implementation in simulation for motor drives or grid interface
  • Report the results including analytical dimensioning of the converter
  • Document the results in technical report and probably publish the results of the work in a technical publication
Your background
  • Knowledge of power electronics topologies and ability to simulate them (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink/PLECS/PSIM)
  • Ability to design power electronics basic converters (analytically) and control. Electromagnetic design of inductors is a plus
  • Strong communication, collaboration skills, strong drive and ability to work independently
