Municipal & Public Sector Sales Representatives are responsible for renewing existing municipal contracts, while also pursuing any new opportunities within the assigned market. This position prospects, sells, manages, and participates in account management activities to ensure the profitable sales growth of municipalities, government entities, parks, government recreational facilities, department of transportation facilities, public colleges/universities, government institutions, and solid waste districts.
Responsibilities of Position:
- Manage business relationships for the municipal market, negotiate pricing, contracts, and contract extensions, and ensure contract terms are met
- Prospect and develop opportunities to bid on all government entities within the market area
- Track current contract information on all existing and new governmental agreements
- Provide monthly reports on all activities relating to an area of coverage
- Attend municipal and governmental meetings relating to waste and recycling initiatives (some evenings/weekends)
- Prepare and deliver responses to client issues and follow up directly with key decision-makers
- Meet regularly with key decision-makers within assigned municipalities, and state and federal agencies to address issues and foster relationships
- Attend local industry trade shows and participate in local chambers or other community associations and trade groups (some evenings/weekends)
- Develop and implement approved strategies and activities to increase penetration and satisfaction to serve as primary point of contact to ensure profitable client retention
- Assist Region Controller on all municipal/governmental bids
- Prepare annual budget information for the municipal line of business
- Utilize the company's CMS, scheduling and documenting activities, and developing customer profiles
- Complete required Customer Service Agreements, reports, and other paperwork in a timely manner and in accordance with Company policy
- Regularly meet with Sales Manager to review weekly sales activities and status of customers
- Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position will not manage employees
Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
- Ability to present and communicate in a professional manner
- Detailed understanding of municipal/public sector government
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to develop and monitor account retention plans, business measurements, budgets, marketing strategies, and SWOT (strength/weakness/opportunity/threat) analyses
- Strong organizational and time management skills are required
- Must be available to support municipal contract maintenance and development after hours as needed
- Proficient in Windows and Microsoft applications AS/400 and Lotus Notes experience preferred
- Possess strong presentation, negotiation, and closing skills
Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Marketing /Sales Management, or related field is preferred
- 5 years of relevant experience in municipal/public sector contract administration or equivalent experience
- Waste industry experience, a plus
Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
- Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
- Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 20 lbs
- Frequently working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
- Frequently working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
- Rarely climbing and/or balancing
- Continuously sitting
- Frequently standing/walking
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
- Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
- Exposure to residential and commercial waste
- Ability to travel between offices, as required
- Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
- Must be available for 24-hour emergency calls
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
- Valid driver's license (if applicable)
- Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
- Must be able to read and speak the English language
