Organizational Unit Overview |
The Department of Surgery is a multi-faceted organization in a complex organizational structure. It is a department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for patient care, medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical services for the hospital and, as such, has a broad range of activities including administration of the OR; allocation of scarce OR resources; adequacy of surgical beds; and credentialing of hospital surgical staff.
The department includes full-time faculty members in the sections of: general & bariatric surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, transplant surgery, trauma & acute care surgery. The department faculty provide surgical care to the people of eastern North Carolina, including pre-operative and post-operative care. The department provides surgical education to medical students and residents every day of the year. The department also has a vibrant research program including funded grants and clinical trials. The employees in the department support the clinical, education and research work of the department. |
Job Duties |
ECU Brody School of Medicine's Department of Surgery is seeking a full-time Social Clinical Research Specialist to join their Surgical Research Division. Duties will include:
Research Administration and Project Development (30%):
Develop clinical trial and grant proposals and budgets in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. Develop and manage regulatory and
IRB documentation for proposed and ongoing studies. Provide clinical research expertise by participating in the design and implementation of research projects.
Develop, implement, and evaluate research activities in conjunction with the Data Coordinating Center for the project. Correspond with sponsor,
UMCIRB, the Data Coordinating Center, and other research sites to coordinate activities and ensure appropriate implementation of research projects. Ensure compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements. Coordinate multiple simultaneous research projects while ensuring quality and consistency. Train and supervise research assistants and students to carry out clinical research according to established protocols. Assign and adjust resources as needed for the successful completion of research projects.
Research/Data Collection & Analysis (35):
Implement and manage all aspects of assigned research program, including collecting data from patients and medical reports, recording study data as prescribed by study protocol and
HIPAA requirements, exhibiting the highest ethics with regard to data collection. Maintaining patient enrollment logs and files, analysis of data to determine eligibility of patients to enroll and participate in the study, use of online programs to record data. Host site visits by study sponsor, including preparation and presentation of site visit reports to sponsors and PI. Recruitment of subjects for participation in research study, including telephone screening, preparation of written materials for review by research subjects, screening clinic patients, maintaining
IRB guidelines, and monitoring enrollment goals. Prepare and present statistical reports for research group and sponsor, contribute to research publications. Preparation for and participation in all audits. Active participant in division research meetings. Analyze results and issue reports to update leadership on progress in a timely manner.
Clinical/Patient Care (30%):
Performing procedures required by study protocol, such as obtaining vital signs. Patient education, including education about study participation and the expectations of participants (federal regulations, safety precautions), education about study protocol including risks involved, telephone follow-up with patients, following
OSHA and
HIPPA guidelines in all situations, communicating with study patients to answer questions pertaining to the study. Will refer all medically indicated patient questions to the Principal Investigator. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

Experience working with eTRACS, RedCAP,
UMCIRB,
