Mechanical Engineering Technician V

Position Summary:

Life Cycle Engineering is looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineering Technician V to join our team in Norfolk, VA assisting Ships Force and involved Navy Technical Activities with troubleshooting, repair, testing and grooming of auxiliary systems and equipment, specifically Cargo/Weapons Elevators, Aircraft Elevators, Deck Edge Doors, Hanger Bay Division Doors, Vertical Package Conveyors and other related systems and equipment.

Clearance Requirement:
Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


  • Provide assessment status and operational checks of equipment and systems which include:


  • Identify and document system and/or equipment problem
  • Correct and/or repair identified discrepancies and required corrective actions
  • Identify and document design problems
  • Identify and document logistic support deficiencies and recommend corrective actions
  • Develop and provide on-the job training (OJT) to Ships Force personnel
  • Verify configuration data and existing 2 Kilos for accuracy


  • Develop test specifications
  • Provide engineering/technical assistance, evaluations, assessments, grooms, tests, inspections, operational checks and training in support of HM&E and peripheral systems.
  • Primary focus area is HM&E mechanical systems to include ship's, cargo/weapons elevators, aircraft elevators, deck edge doors, hanger bay division doors, vertical package conveyors, systems.
  • Troubleshoot, restore, and replace faulty or defective components in HM&E systems, equipment, and related peripheral systems. Includes testing, alignment, and restoration to normal operation.
  • Conduct fault analysis and the assembly and disassembly of units and subsystems.
  • Evaluate, assess, and provide maintenance training to Ship's Force.
  • Provide input for Technical Assistance Visit Reports (TAVRs) IAW the JFMM requirements for each on board tech assist.
  • Provide Total Ship Readiness Assessment (TSRA), operational, and maintenance assessment support and over-the-shoulder training to Ship's Force on HM&E systems, equipment, and related peripheral systems.


Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • High School Diploma.
  • At least five (5) years (within the past 7 years) of specialized, hands on experience in the operation, repair, maintenance and assessment of US Naval auxiliary equipment to include but not limited to:
  • Cargo/Weapons Elevators
  • Aircraft Elevators
  • Deck Edge Doors
  • Hanger Bay Division Doors
  • Vertical Package Conveyors and other assigned equipment as directed
  • Familiarity with elevator, door, and conveyor terminologies, including the terms defined and applied in the following: Naval Ships' Technical Manual (NSTM) Chapters 772, 588, 572, 300, MIL-E-17807, Common Assessment Procedures, Systems Operability Tests, and applicable portions of the General Specifications for Overhaul (GSO).
  • Demonstrated experience working in the official capacity of a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the aforementioned systems/equipment/components for a US Navy Engineering Activity, US Navy Shipboard Engineering Department,
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), or industrial/commercial equivalent is also required.


Physical Demands and Expectations:

  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting (up to 75 pounds), and standing; occasional prolonged sitting
  • Maneuvering around tight spaces in a shipboard environment
  • Ability to speak, read, hear, and write, with or without assistance.
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment.
